There are some tungsten sinker’s types:
Pyramid and bank tungsten sinkers work best when dropping straight down to the bottom, but can become easily hung up on bottom structure. Surf anglers often select a sand tungsten sinker because of its flat design, which makes it less susceptible to being swept around in the waves once it has had the opportunity to settle into the sandy bottom off the beach. Torpedo tungsten sinkers, sometimes referred to as trolling tungsten sinkers, are cylindrical, longer and have an eyelet positioned at both ends of the weight so that it can be tied to the main line at one end and a leader at the other. It is also a favorite of Pacific coast deep water anglers, who will often clip ones between 4 to 8 ounces to the terminal end of their rig when targeting rockfish and lingcod at depths of 150 to 300 feet.
The rubber core tungsten sinker is used by anglers who want to place a weight at a random spot on their line at a point where there may be no place to effectively tie it on. By twisting the fishing line into the small slit and pulling the end of the rubber core, the tungsten sinker will hold its position until it is once again twisted off without the need to ever cut the line.
One of the most versatile and popular fishing weight is the egg tungsten sinker, which is appropriately shaped and has a small hole through its center to allow the line to feed through without resistance when the reel is in free spool. Egg tungsten sinkers can either be allowed to slide down the line to the terminal end directly next to the hook, or be placed above a barrel swivel on the other side of a leader that is between 12 and 20 inches in length. The latter configuration is also known as a Carolina rig, and can be extremely productive using live bait or soft plastics.
But no matter which tungsten sinker best meets your needs on any given fishing trip, they remain some of the most important, and least expensive, pieces of terminal gear in your tackle box.
