Unless they happen to be lining a live baitfish, most anglers rely on some type of sinker to help get their bait down into a zone where the fish are biting. Traditionally, fishing sinkers have been made exclusively from lead for decades before its negative environmental impact was fully realized, particularly in freshwater lakes and tributaries. Luckily, in recent years a number of non-lead alternatives have begun to be used in the manufacture of fishing weights. The most popular of these substitutes is tungsten, which creates a product that is heavier, denser, and smaller than traditional lead sinkers in the same weight class. Tungsten fishing sinker is the substitution to lead. Today, there are a wide variety and styles of weights available to anglers that are specifically suited to their individual needs.
The smallest and most basic tungsten sinker is the split shot, which can be pinched onto the line or leader material a short distance away from the hook. These round weights range from the size of a BB up to several ounces. The lightest sizes are most common, however, since they are usually used to coax a live baitfish to swim a bit deeper in the water column rather than take them all the way to the bottom.
Heavier fishing weights design to take your bait down to the bottom and keep it there come in a variety of styles; the pyramid sinker, sand sinker, bank sinker and torpedo sinker are all capable of getting the job done depending upon the prevailing current and water movement.
