Tungsten Alloy Gamma Ray Shielding Material

As a new radiation shielding material, environmentally-friendly and pollution-free tungsten alloy gamma ray shielding material is expected to replace toxic heavy metal lead for the manufacture of medical shields. It is reported that the greater the density, the stronger the ability to attenuate the rays. So, what is the density of a tungsten alloy gamma ray shielding material W94Ni6 alloy prepared by laser rapid prototyping?

The results show that the density of the W94Ni6 tungsten-nickel alloy is 17.25 g/cm3, and the thickness of the W94Ni6 alloy required to absorb the same amount of gamma rays is 63.4% of lead. From this point of view, tungsten-nickel alloy is more suitable than lead as a gamma ray shielding material for preparing thinner shielding materials. In addition, experts also selected a Cs137 source with a gamma photon energy of 0.551 Mev to test its shielding performance and test the hardness of the alloy. The results show that the hardness of tungsten-nickel alloy is 54.2HRC, which is 64% higher than that of pure tungsten. The experts also observed the microstructure of tungsten-nickel alloy and found that tungsten and nickel have formed a solid solution.
