Different Names of Violet Tungsten Oxide

Generally, naming of substance follows some rules. The same substance may have some different names. Here are the naming rules of violet tungsten oxide as following as:

1. Naming after the color of substance.

There are three oxides of tungsten: yellow tungsten oxide (WO3), blue tungsten oxide (WO2.90), and violet tungsten oxide (WO2.72). These oxides are named after their colors respectively. The naming approach makes people tell different substances by their colors fast. Many chemical elements are also named in this way, such as gold and silver.

2. Naming after the category of substance.

It can be seen that violet tungsten disulfide is named after the category of the substance. As for violet tungsten oxide, it is a kind of oxide of tungsten. Violet tungsten oxide can also be called γ-tungsten oxide. And another oxide of tungsten, blue tungsten oxide, can also be called β-tungsten oxide. The naming of these two oxides of tungsten are on basis of their crystal structures. Generally, the Greek alphabet selected reflects the stability of the crystal structure. β-tungsten oxide has more stable crystal structure than γ-tungsten oxide.
