Properties of Tungsten Disulfide

Tungsten disulfide is not only a kind of solid lubricating material with high quality, but also a catalyst with good activity. It is widely used in lubrication material,  piezoelectric material and other important fields, which is closely related to some of its properties.

Tungsten sulfide is usually obtained in dark grey color having a hexagonal crystal structure. This kind of material is very much chemically inactive that it can only dissolve in aquantitative mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. Tungsten sulfide converts into corresponding tungsten trioxide while burning in presence of oxygen. And it does not melt during heating in absence of oxygen gas. It disintegrates to elemental tungsten and sulfur near about 1250°C.

With good lubricating performance, tungsten disulfide acts as a lubricant material and the friction coefficient is only 0.03. Under vigorous conditions of load, vacuum and temperature, the lubricating performance of tungsten disulfide are excellent. In addition, this kind of material also has high application value in high temperature and high pressure. It works stably from -240°C to 650°C in normal atmosphere and from -170 °C to 1316°C in vacuum. The film of tungsten disulfide has high load bearing ability, which is 300,000 psi.

With conductivity and photochemical property, tungsten disulfide can replace molybdenum disulfide and graphene in certain application fields such as electrical and electronic industries, sound detection and production of electronic frequency and high voltage. This kind of material has high application value in these important fields.

Moreover, tungsten disulfide is piezoelectric material because it is able to produce electric charge under an external mechanical stress. And the process is reversible. When a mechanical stress (such as, deformation, bending force, pressure) is applied to this kind of material, the charge symmetry within the crystal structure has been disrupted, which results an external electric field and vice versa.
