Tungsten Disulfide Coating Used in Parts of Automobile Engine

Tungsten disulfide coating can be used to treat three important parts of automobile engine---piston, piston ring and piston pin---with its good lubricating performance. These three parts are closely connected with the running of engine.

Tungsten disulfide coating is a solid lubrication film formed by the mixture of tungsten disulfide powder and organic binder (epoxy resin) or inorganic binder (sodium silicate, etc.). It is sprayed or brushed on the surface of metal with its advantages in lubrication such as low friction coefficient, high compression resistance, high oxidation resistance and excellent extreme pressure abrasion resistance.

Tungsten disulfide coating can be used in three parts of automobile engine.

1. Piston of automobile engine.

During the running of automobile engine, the piston reciprocates in the cylinder at a high speed (8~12 m/s) under the high temperature, which may cause wear and tear of it. Therefore, it is usually made of high-strength aluminum alloys. To reduce the friction loss, tungsten disulfide coating can be used to treat the piston with its good lubricating performance under the high temperature.

2. Piston ring of automobile engine.

The piston ring works at high temperature, high pressure and high speed, which makes the lubrication of it extremely difficult. Thus the piston ring has been the engine part with the shortest service life. During the running of automobile engine, the piston ring is affected by the high-temperature and high-pressure gas in the cylinder. At the same time, it moves with the piston at a high speed. In addition, the oil is easy to deteriorate under the high temperature. So it is difficult to lubricate the piston ring and the wear of the piston ring is usually serious. Tungsten disulfide coating can be used to solve this problem.

3. Piston pin of automobile engine.

The piston pin is usually made of low carbon alloy steel and low carbon steel. Its surface is usually carburized and hardened. Tungsten disulfide coating can be used to treat it and improve its abrasion resistance.
