Tungsten Carbide Carbon Composites Preparation by Microemulsion Method

Tungsten carbide has a catalytic activity similar to platinum. It has stable physical and chemical properties and low cost. With people's attention to clean energy, the application of tungsten carbide in catalytic fields, such as direct methanol fuel cell, catalytic hydrogen evolution, supercapacitor and catalytic desulfurization, has attracted extensive attention of scientists.

Some researchers have prepared tungsten carbide carbon composites by microemulsion method to enhance the catalytic activity of tungsten carbide.

(1)Dissolve the surfactant into the mixture of ethanol and water, then add carbon source and tungsten source in turn, and stir vigorously for 15~60 minutes to form "oil in water" microemulsion.

(2)The microemulsion in step (1) is placed in an open vessel, evaporated at 30~60 degrees Celsius, mixed solvent is removed, and then solid products are solidified at 100~150 degrees Celsius for 6~48 hours.

(3)In reducing atmosphere, the solid products obtained by step (2) were calcined at 700-1600 ℃ for 1-7 hours, then cooled and ground to obtain worm-like Mesoporous Tungsten carbide/carbon composites.

The obtained tungsten carbide particles have the characteristics of uniform distribution and single phase, which can be widely used in various electrochemical catalysis, sensors and organic synthesis, especially as catalysts or carriers for direct methanol fuel cells, in order to achieve the goal of saving platinum catalysts.
