Darts come in a variety of materials, weights and grips; here I will talk about the different materials used in the production of darts, particularly the main three metals used: brass, nickel and tungsten. Darts will generally consist of a set of three dart barrels, points, shafts and flights which help to stabilize the flight of the dart when thrown; although it is the material of the barrel that is concerned here.
Brass
Brass darts are the most commonly seen types of darts because the inexpensive metal makes them popular in pubs, taverns and at home. Darts made of brass are usually aimed at beginners and are of low cost, therefore making brass a good choice for darts players who have either rarely or even never played darts before. Brass is a softer and less expensive metal than either nickel or tungsten and the drawbacks that come with this include any knurling on the brass grip has the potential to wear down quickly; as well as brass darts having a thicker barrel, because of the lighter metal, which can increase the number of bounce-outs and makes close grouping more difficult.
Nickel
Nickel darts are similarly inexpensive, although do generally cost a small amount more than brass. Darts made of nickel are usually the best choice for beginners who plan on playing relatively frequently because they are made of a harder metal and are therefore more durable than brass because the grip will not wear away as easily.
Tungsten
Tungsten is an extremely dense metal, considerably more so than brass or nickel; this increased density allows more weight in a smaller (thinner) barrel, making close grouping easier while maintaining the weight and minimizing bounce-outs. These high-density tungsten darts resist wear far better than brass or nickel. Tungsten darts are recommended for all darts players who have played competitively at some point and are the darts used by all professionals because having all of the darts mass concentrated into such a small, thin area vastly enhances the control of the dart. When buying tungsten darts, it is important to pay attention to the percentage of tungsten in the dart barrels because it is central to the quality of the dart; in general the higher the percentage the better, and more expensive, the dart is.
To find the right dart for you, it would be a good start to analyze yourself and your skill level; for example, If at any point you have played darts competitively before, or play it quite frequently and are looking to improve your game, then you should look to buy tungsten darts with a higher percentage of tungsten depending on how many competitive games you have played or plan to play.

Tungsten Darts Revolution

The first darts that were ever used would have been arrows, as used by medieval archers. This was the earliest recording of someone throwing arrows at a target. The earliest darts of the modern times were made of wood with natural feathered flights, usually three, and a small lead ring around the body or barrel to give it weight.
These darts were common right up to the 1950’s and could be found being used at carnivals around the U.K. In France, they can still be found.
Most players were soon using darts made of brass. Brass darts were far heavier than their wooden counterparts and could be made into almost any shape, giving the dart player a far wider choice in design and weight.
The first brass darts had wooden shafts with flights of paper and some with feathers. They later changed to plastic. The choice was getting larger for the player, but many players still today use feathered and paper flights in some countries.
In the early 1970’s somebody machined down an electrode used for underwater welding. These electrodes were made from a mixture of copper and tungsten.
As they were not a true alloy but mixed by a method call cintering they were relatively easy to machine and were considerably heavier than brass. This enabled the maker to keep the dart barrels smaller for the same amount of weight, an advantage when you are trying to throw them at a target of limited size.
Unicorn made the first commercial tungsten darts, and I had the pleasure of trying them at the world trade fair in London in 1971 at the Unicorn stand manned by Mr. Barry Twomlow.
A few years later the manufacturers of tungsten introduced a heavier still material using nickel with tungsten which enables them to introduce a larger content of tungsten, whilst still being able to machine it.
These tungsten billets, as they were known, came in different values from 65% up to 97%, the heaviest billet being the 97%. The material was now 16% heavier than lead, and far heavier than the original brass.
Tungsten not only allowed the player to have a slimmer dart but there was another unexpected bonus. The tungsten did not have that bounce quality that brass had, it was more like lead. When darts collide with each other on the board the tungsten ones appeared to stick close together where the brass barrels bounce off each other.
This allowed for far tighter grouping, which in turn gave higher scores. With the introduction of the tungsten darts, a whole New World of flights and shafts came, mostly for show and not performance.
The so-called Tungsten Revolution also saw a vast increase in the amount of people playing the game and it became a big success for the TV stations.
The Tungsten dart had a lot to do with this huge change in the game.

A melting point lower than the base brazing alloys as solder material, the solder melts when heated, and by wetting and capillary action to fill and maintain operations in the joint gap, and the base material in a solid state, relying on the mother liquid and solid solder mutual diffusion of material formed between the brazed joints.
The physical and chemical properties of brazed parent material is small, welding stress and deformation is small, a large performance difference can be welded dissimilar metals, to complete the same number of welded joints neat and beautiful appearance, simple equipment, low investment in production.
Welding process of the welding machine is first opening water and electric high-frequency welding equipment and then turning on the power panel. Turning the body into the prepared sensor in remote control switch is depressed to start heating. When the work-piece is heated to 830-860 degree melting brazing filler piece to complete the weld seam. The whole process takes about 30 seconds approximately.

Tungsten Dart Origin

The era of tungsten came along in 1970. Barry Twomlow had won the World Championship the previous year with a set of brass darts. Some companies realized the importance of retaining the weight of the darts and at the same time reducing the darts in volume to allow greater visual sight of the highest scoring parts of the dart board.
Tungsten is three times the density of brass. The higher density makes it possible to make a slimmer dart, which creates less air resistance when throwing, and is also easier to group together in a small space like the doubles and trebles. The desired weight can therefore be achieved, without adding bulk. Players became to accept without question that Tungsten darts is more suitable.

Steel Darts vs. Tungsten Darts
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Information
- Published on Wednesday, 16 July 2014 18:15
The sport of darts remains an incredibly popular game, very easy to play when out or at home. For the uninitiated, however, there are lots of options when it comes to selecting the right kind of equipment. Darts themselves are made with a variety of materials, weights and tips, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Weight of the dart's barrel
In order to fly effectively, darts need a certain amount of weight behind them. The main part of the dart, the barrel, is usually made with metal alloy. Steel and tungsten are both used, as are brass and silver/nickel alloys. The advantage of tungsten over all other types is its density, meaning the dart can be quite weighty while still being slim. This is useful if you throw your darts in close groupings to one another on the board. Fatter shafts will tend to bounce off of other darts and may miss their intended target or even bounce off the board.
The tip of the dart
When it comes to selecting a tip for your darts, the board you play on is the critical factor. The tip of the dart is either made from steel or a soft tip. The steel is weighty enough to stay in the bed of the traditional bristle dartboard. Soft tips are essential for use on the electronic dartboards.
Costs
The cost of your darts may influence your choice. Brass and steel barrels tend to be cheaper, so if you are buying a set for the first time to see whether you enjoy the game, you might wish to try these before committing to the more expensive tungsten darts, which can sometimes be 2-3 times as expensive.
What professionals use
Although the original question asked whether steel darts were better than tungsten, the answer is probably that a combination is best. Professional darts players will typically use tungsten barrels and steel tips.

Carbide is an inorganic compound which contains equal numbers of tungsten and carbon atoms. It may also be colloquially referred to as "carbide." In its most basic form of a gray powder, but can be press-formed into various shapes, for industrial machinery, tools, abrasives, even as jewelry. Carbide, also belong to heavy metals, the bending strength is more good than any other, including iron and steel, including metal or alloys. Because of its high resistance to abrasion, wear and tear is to produce a variety of utensils ideal choice. Generally, carbide parts mainly for the metal processing industry, which stresses a strong tool. However, the high bending strength and wear resistance of cemented carbide also features the use of many non-metallic solution provides a cost effective, such as: crushing, grinding stones. Carbide is mainly used for wear demanding applications, such as: drilling, milling, trenching and cutting.
Carbide Parts Features: high hardness (86 ~ 93HRA, equivalent to 69 ~ 81HRC); hot hardness (up to 900 ~ 1000 ℃, keeping 60HRC); wear resistance. Such as: 4 to 7 times higher than the carbide parts high-speed steel cutting tools, tool life of 5 to 80 times higher. Manufacture of molds, gauges, life expectancy of 20 to 150 times higher than the alloy tool steel. 50HRC be about cutting hard materials. But brittle carbide parts, cutting can not be performed, a complicated shape is difficult to produce a solid tool, often made of blades of different shapes, or a die cutter body using welding, bonding, mechanical clamping, in particular a method for installing such to use.
Carbide tools are widely used in machinery and engineering industries. Wooden Dart
Wooden darts don't be seen these around very often. They are made of lightweight wood shaft with turkey feather flights (no parts to replace).
Brass Dart
Brass is the lightest of the three metallic darts listed here. It is a soft alloy (copper & zinc) which makes it easy to for manufacturers to shape and work with.
Nickel-Silver Darts
Nickel-silver is yet another light dart that is an alloy consisting of nickel, copper and zinc. Like brass, it is easy for manufacturers to shape and work with.
Tungsten Darts
Tungsten, unlike brass and nickel-silver, is a very heavy and dense metal. It is usually mixed with nickel so you will see on a package something like 80-20 (80% tungsten/20% nickel). It is harder to work with but will last longer than the other two (especially the knurling). On average, a 20 gram tungsten dart will be half the size of a 20 gram brass dart which will allow for tighter groupings on the board. This is the reason most of the really good throwers use tungsten darts.

Even the most attractive lure, bait or fly is useless if the angler cannot place it in front of the fish. And even the attractive lure, bait or fly is useless if the materials are wrong. We should use the right material to make right sinker and use it in right place. For the sake of best fishing quality, we chose tungsten sinker which is a dense, heavy weight, environmental. And if you want to fishing in striper bass and surf fishing, tungsten pyramid fishing sinker is you choice.
Pyramid sinkers are shaped like an inverted pyramid with an eye at the base of the pyramid. The sinker is attached by threading the line through the eye. These sinkers are often used in fast currents, because their flat edges prevent them from being rolled along bottom in fast currents. The sinker's shape allows the sinker to sink quickly and remain anchored in fast currents. The sinker will bury itself into the sand or mud floor bottom. Tungsten pyramid fishing sinker is used in striper bass and surf fishing.
