Drill bits are cutting tools used to create cylindrical holes, almost always of circular cross-section. Drill bits come in many sizes and have many uses. Bits are usually connected to a mechanism, often simply referred to as a drill, which rotates them and provides torque and axial force to create the hole.

The shank is the part of the drill bit grasped by the chuck of a drill. The cutting edges of the drill bit are at one end, and the shank is at the other.

Exceptionally, specially-shaped bits can cut holes of non-circular cross-section.

The term drill may refer to either a drilling machine or a drill bit for use in a drilling machine. In this article, for clarity, drill bit or bit is used throughout to refer to a bit for use in a drilling machine, and drill refers always to a drilling machine.

Many different materials are used for or on drill bits, depending on the required application. Many hard materials, such as carbides, are much more brittle than steel, and are far more subject to breaking, particularly if the drill is not held at a very constant angle to the workpiece; e.g., when hand-held.

Tungsten carbide and other carbides are extremely hard, and can drill virtually all materials while holding an edge longer than other bits. The material is expensive and much more brittle than steels; consequently they are mainly used for drill bit tips, small pieces of hard material fixed or brazed onto the tip of a bit made of less hard metal. However, it is becoming common in job shops to use solid carbide bits. In very small sizes it is difficult to fit carbide tips; in some industries, most notably PCB manufacturing, requiring many holes with diameters less than 1 mm, solid carbide bits are used.

By July, Europe ferro tungsten market still remains weak, spot market is disordered, Rotterdam warehouse transaction price is between 41.5 and 43 usd/kg-w, 41.5 usd/kg-w is clearing shipments price. The European steel mills implement reduction of output and overhaul in summer, market ferro tungsten purchase is reducing, bidding is also reducing, traders compete fiercely, MB oversea ferro tungsten quotation lasts by July, newest quotation is Rotterdam 41.5-42 usd/kg-w, however China ferro tungsten export price keeps stable, Basic maintenance in Rotterdam 41 usd/kg-w. Along with the market remains weak, less deals, parts of Europe traders are cutting price to promote transaction, related market participants think European ferro tungsten price still has a falling risk.

Although Russian Few70 market requirment remains weak,transactions are less. Limited by production costs, manufacturer is lack of adjusting price power, Few70's tax included price is steady at 1100-1250 rouble/kg(44.7-50.8 usd/kg-w), without obvious change. At present most of plants produce ferro tungsten depending on market requirment, as receiving few order in recent two month , some plants consider to stop manufacturing, most of plants compress production scale, some reduce 50%, plants quotation is stable, traders wait and see the future market.

Ferro-Tungsten 

Ferro-tungsten is a master alloy for the production of tungsten-containing steels.  The raw materials for ferro-tungsten production are rich ore or ore concentrates of wolframite or scheelite.  Also artificial scheelite or soft scrap can be used.  The tungsten trioxide in these compounds can be reduced either carbothermically in electric arc furnaces or metallothermically by silicon and/or aluminum.  Also a mixed carbothermic-silicothermic production is in use.

Commercial ferro-tungsten contains between 75 and 85% W.  It has a steel grey appearance and a fine-grained structure consisting of FeW and Fe₂W.  It is supplied in 80–100 mm lumps.

Melting Base

Melting Base is another master alloy in tungsten steel production. It can have various compositions according to the tungsten scrap material in use. The tungsten content varies depending on type between 10 and 38% besides iron and sometimes 5.5% Mo and also 5 to 10% Co.

Different types of scrap materials are mixed to meet the required composition. Reductive melting is done in electric arc furnaces and the melt is finally granulated by casting on a rotating disc and quenching in water (size <10 mm).
