Producing Spherical Tungsten Powder by Mechanical Method

Tungsten powder is usually produced by hydrogen reducing tungsten oxide method in industry. The reduced tungsten powder grain shape is irregular, powder property is not so active, piling density is low. With development of technology, spherical tungsten powder has been paying much attention due to its advanced properties.

At present, main producing method of tungsten powder can be divided into physical method and chemical method. Physical methods mainly include arc spray gun method and plasma method. Chemical method includes chemical vapor evaporation method. However, there are problems exists in the above mentioned methods, such as complex process, uneasy controlled parameter, pollution resulted from waste liquid. Researchers have brought up mechanical method which is low cost, easy for mass production and parameter control. Steps are as follows:

1. Weigh a certain amount of tungsten powder, put tungsten powder in oven under 350~550℃ for oxidation process for 0.5~2h. Edge of tungsten powder is firstly oxidized. Keep stirring during the process to make edge of tungsten powder being fully oxidized.

2. Remove powder from step one into spherical machine, rotation rate is 3000~5000r/min, processing time is 5~120min.

3. Sieving tungsten powder from step 2 and then add into reducing furnace, reducing temperature is 650~750℃, reducing time is 20~40min. Spherical tungsten powder with even particle size distribution and spherical degree is obtained.

In conclusion, tungsten powder produced by mechanical method has higher surface cleanness, better spherical degree and even particle size distribution. It also simplifies producing process of tungsten powder without pollution. The producing method and process is simple and easier to control the parameter.
