At the beginning of the week, the domestic rare earth market as a whole showed a relatively positive performance, with prices of many products continuing to rise to varying degrees.

On May 16, 2025, Australian company Lynas announced that its new production line in Malaysia successfully produced dysprosium oxide, marking its first heavy rare earth oxide product. The successful mass production of dysprosium oxide represents a critical step forward in Lynas’ rare earth supply chain development, significantly enhancing its supply chain resilience and opening a new overseas supply pathway for the global rare earth market. Notably, the raw material for this batch of dysprosium oxide comes from the Mt Weld rare earth deposit—a large, high-grade overseas rare earth site—whose abundant reserves and quality ore provide a solid resource foundation for Lynas’ dysprosium oxide production.

On June 18, 2025, Lynas, an Australian company, announced that its advanced materials plant in Malaysia successfully achieved the first mass production of terbium oxide. This marks the company’s second heavy rare earth oxide product following the initial production of dysprosium oxide in May 2025. Amid China’s rare earth export controls and high overseas rare earth prices, this milestone by Lynas—the world’s largest rare earth company outside China—holds significant importance. It can help alleviate the urgent demand for rare earth resources in overseas markets and provide a new support point for persifying the global rare earth supply chain.

This week, the domestic rare earth market exhibited a pattern of both rising and falling prices. Early in the week, limited downstream inquiries and relatively ample spot supplies for some products led many suppliers to slightly lower their quotes. However, nearing the weekend, bolstered by stronger production cost support and increased low-price procurement enthusiasm from downstream users, prices for certain products saw an uptick.

The domestic rare earth market continues to operate in a weak trend, with mainstream product prices experiencing varying degrees of decline, such as praseodymium-neodymium oxide dropping by approximately 2,000 yuan/ton, praseodymium-neodymium metal by about 5,000 yuan/ton, and terbium oxide by around 10 yuan/kg.

On June 14, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant achieved another breakthrough: Yttrium-90 (Y-90) glass microspheres irradiated in a heavy water reactor were successfully removed and passed all relevant inspections. This milestone marks China's elimination of its previous heavy reliance on imported Y-90 microspheres and establishes the nation as one of the few in the world capable of producing this cutting-edge medical product using a commercial nuclear reactor.

The domestic rare earth market has remained in a sideways trend overall, with low trading activity and no significant price fluctuations due to traders largely maintaining rigid, demand-driven transactions. As of today, the prices of neodymium oxide, erbium oxide, and holmium oxide are approximately RMB 450,000/ton, RMB 305,000/ton, and RMB 520,000/ton, respectively.

The first U.S.-China economic and trade consultation mechanism meeting was held in London on June 9-10, 2025. Reports indicate that both sides reached a framework agreement in principle to implement the consensus from the June 5 leaders’ call and the Geneva talks. The U.S. Commerce Secretary stated that the trade framework and implementation plan with China should resolve restrictions on rare earths and magnetic materials.
