How to Identify Fake Coins

You do not have to be an expert in coins to identify fake coins. While it does help to be trained in identifying counterfeit money, there are relatively easy ways to tell if a coin is indeed fake or not. By knowing these tricks and what to look for, you will be able to properly detect if a coin is in fact a fake or is a legitimate piece.

1.Hold the coin in question sideways and against an original coin. Inspect the sides of the coin in question as well as the thickness. A legitimate coin will usually vary in color and texture as opposed to having one solid color and texture. Also, compare the thickness and weight of the two coins to ensure they are both relatively the same thickness and weight.

2.Look at the characteristics of the coin in question and compare it with the legitimate coin. Nearly every coin has a certain impression and mark, and if the coin is authentic it will have these. Look at what stands out in the coin (the design, the shape of images on the coin, and so on) and make sure the word "COPY" or the letter "R" is not stamped on the coin. Look to see that every piece of this coin is identical to the legitimate coin.

3.Drop both coins carefully and listen to the sound of each coin as it hits the surface. If the coins do not sound relatively the same, you have a right to be suspicious. Feel around on the coins with both of your thumbs. See if each unique trait of the coins feels exactly the same to the touch. Finally, place a magnet over the coin in question and ensure the coin is not attracted to the magnet. If it is, you have a fake, as some fake coins are made of steel because it is easier to make a fake using stee.

Detecting Fake Gold Coins

Gold buyers, collectors and sellers could end up wasting their money buying a fake gold coin, unless they have the tools and knowledge to test whether or not a coin is genuine. You don't have to be an expert to tell the difference between a real gold coin and a fake as long as you have the right tools to measure it and a reference book to check those measurements against.

1.Hold a magnet over the coin you are testing. If the coin sticks to the magnet, it has traces of steel or some other metallic metal in it meaning it is forged or plated and not solid gold.

2.Place the coin on a scale and record the exact weight. Look up the official weight of the coin in a reference book or on a reputable website. If the coin is more than a hundredth of a gram lighter or heavier, than the coin is suspect.

3.Measure the exact diameter of the coin with a caliper and compare that to the diameter listed in the reference book. If the diameter is off, even by a little, than the coin could be a counterfeit.

4.Examine the coin's surface more closely with a loupe. Look for any bubbles, depressions or scoring marks that indicate the coin was crudely made. A soapy film on the surface can also be a sign the coin is fake. Also check the date and mint mark against the ones listed in the reference book.

5.Drop the coin and listen to the sound it makes when it hits a hard surface. Gold coins have a distinct ringing sound, while fakes do not.

6.Using tongs, carefully drop the coin in a beaker of nitric acid. If the coin is pure gold, it will not react with the acid. However, if there are any base metals in the gold than those metals will dissolve. They will appear to be bubbling up as they corrode in the acid.

How to Make Fake Gold From Nickels

Making fake gold coins from nickels is a fun project. With a few simple steps, you can change a lowly nickel into shiny gold coin. You can fool a person for a moment, until that person realizes that Jefferson's face graces the coin

1.Select an ovenproof bowl for the project of making a nickel into gold. Fill it with water.

2.Measure 1 tablespoon of sodium hydroxide and add it into the water. Add 1 tablespoon per nickel you wish to turn into gold. Be careful not to let the sodium hydroxide touch your skin.

3.Add 1/3 tablespoon of zinc to the water and sodium hydroxide and stir.

4.Set a nickel into the ovenproof bowl, and place it into a heated oven until the water boils. Remove the bowl when the nickel changes color. Pour the water from the bowl, and put the nickel on a plate.

5.Take the nickel from the bowl, and hold it to the flame in the burner with a set of tongs. Your nickel will change to a lovely "gold" coin with Jefferson's face on its face.

Military Tungsten Alloy Swaging Rod & S-125

Military tungsten alloy swaging rod is made of tungsten alloy rod through calcinations. The normal method used in the processing are extruding, forging and sintering. After calcinations, tungsten alloy swaging rod has higher ductility, toughness and tensile strength than tungsten alloy rod, so it can be used for a longer time. Military tungsten alloy swaging rod can be used for S-125.

The S-125 Neva/Pechora Soviet surface-to-air missile system was designed by Aleksei Mihailovich Isaev to complement the S-25 and S-75. It has a shorter effective range and lower engagement altitude than either of its predecessors and also flies slower, but due to its two-stage design it is more effective against more maneuverable targets. It is also able to engage lower flying targets than the previous systems, and being more modern it is much more resistant to ECM than the S-75. The 5V24 (V-600) missiles reach around Mach 3 to 3.5 in flight, both stages powered by solid fuel rocket motors. The S-125, like the S-75, uses radio command guidance. The naval version of this system has the NATO reporting name SA-N-1 Goa and original designation M-1 Volna (Russian Волна – wave).

With military tungsten alloy swaging rod, S-125 can destroy aircrafts effectively, for its high density, excellent hardness and superior ultimate tensile strength.

The S-75 Dvina is a Soviet-designed, high-altitude air defense system, built around a command guided surface-to-air missile. Since its first deployment in 1957 it has become the most widely deployed air defense system in history. It scored the first destruction of an enemy aircraft by a surface-to-air missile, shooting down a Taiwanese Martin RB-57D Canberra over China, on October 7, 1959, hitting it with three V-750 (1D) missiles at an altitude of 20 km (65,600 ft). The success was attributed to Chinese fighters at the time in order to keep the S-75 program secret.

The S-25 Berkut  is a surface-to-air guided missile, the first operational SAM system in the Soviet Union. Its NATO reporting name is SA-1 Guild. It was used only to defend Moscow, while the more mobile S-75 (SA-2 Guideline) would be used in almost all other roles. Other names include the R-113 (target acquisition radar), B-200 (target engagement radar), A-11/A-12 (antennas for B-200), and V-300 (a SAM); S-25 is for Systema 25, referring to the system as a whole.

How to Identify Fake U.S. Gold Eagles

Issued in one ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes, gold eagles (or more accurately American Eagle Gold Coins) are 22 karat (.916 fine) coins struck at the West Point Mint and forged from gold mined in the United States. They are available in three formats: bullion, proof and (since 2006) uncirculated. Since their introduction in 1986, gold eagles have been a hit with investors, with over 13 million of the one-ounce bullion coin being distributed as of November 2010. Gold-plated reproduction eagles have appeared on Internet auction sites, but collectors should have little difficulty in distinguishing these from the genuine article

1.Examine the coin to see if it has the word "copy" stamped upon it in tiny letters. This appears on the more honest of the reproductions.

2.Use a jeweler's loupe to scrutinize the design (Liberty striding forward, by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the same image that appeared on the double eagle of 1907). Liberty's gown and hair should be crisply realized, especially on the proof and uncirculated coins, which are made with multiple strikes to achieve a meticulous finish. No gold-plated reproduction can hold that degree of detail.

3.Weigh the coin on a pair of digital scales. Every gold eagle bears a denomination expressed as weight in ounces. Make sure that the denomination and the actual weight match up. On fakes, they won't.

4.Look carefully at the accompanying documentation and packaging. Proof and uncirculated gold eagles should be sealed within plastic capsules mounted in satin-lined velvet presentation cases. Each has a certificate of authenticity. The only avenue for bullion gold eagles to be sold to the public is through an authorized dealer. Check if the current owner is such an authorized person, or has a bill of sale from one.

How to Spot Fake Gold American Coins

The most valuable precious metals become, the more vulnerable they become to counterfeiting. Those who collect gold coins as insurance in uncertain economic times and those who collect them as a hobby must have a practical method for identifying gold coins and differentiating them from even the best of fakes. With a few basic techniques and tools, you can spot fake gold coins.

1.Look at the coin. Real gold coins have a distinctive yellow, dull but golden shine. Coins that are gold mixed with a cocktail of other metals often have a gold tinge, but they also have other colors, such as copper, so the overall appearance is somewhat coppery.

2.Place the coin on the concave end of a Fisch tool. The Fisch will calculate the density of the coin in grams per cubic centimeter. Because gold has an immutable density, a fake gold coin is likely to be significantly lighter for its diameter. The Fisch tool will help you determine that.

3.Drop the coin on the hard surface of a table. A gold coin will make a distinctive chime, whereas a coin mixed with other metals will simply produce a dull thud. Ideally, you should have a coin that you know is gold to compare to the coin in question.

4.Scratch the coin on a rough surface, and examine the color of the coin beneath the outer layer. If it's a different color, then you have a gold-plated coin.

5.Place a magnet near the gold coin. A pure gold coin will not be attracted to the magnet. A fake gold coin, which is a medley of other metals, will gravitate toward the magnet.
