Tungsten Trioxide Applied for Inorganic Electrochromic Film

Tungsten trioxide is an important raw material for the preparation of inorganic electrochromic film. The prepared electrochromic film is a good helper for achieving the function of heat insulation and heat preservation of architectural glass, automotive glass and even aircraft glass. So, do you know what is the electrochromic mechanism of a tungsten oxide film?

The electron and ion double injection coloring mechanism of the tungsten oxide film means that under the external electric field, the ions M+ and the electrons are paired into the tungsten trioxide film, and the electrons are in the 5d orbit. In a W5+ local region, to maintain charge balance, ions will reside in this region to form a blue tungsten bronze compound MxWO3, and electrons will transition between the W5+ and the W6+, thereby causing tungsten oxide film coloration. However, analysis by mass spectrometry and nuclear reaction showed that a certain amount of W4+ existed even after the pure tungsten trioxide film was colored. To this end, experts believe that W4+, W5+ and W6+ coexist in tungsten bronze compounds. When the electrons absorb energy, they respectively transition between the two-levels of the W4+ and the W5+ and the W6+, and the tungsten oxide film is colored. Among them, WO3 is a bleached state, and MxW03 is a blue colored state.
