Amorphous tungsten trioxide thin film can form larger structural voids than crystalline tungsten trioxide film with quadrangular tunnels as amorphous WO3 has irregular network structure such as pentagonal tunnels and hexagonal tunnels in addition to quadrilateral tunnels.

In this regard, experts said that the structure of the amorphous WO3 film is more conducive to the injection and extraction of ions during film operation, which can improve the response rate and discoloration performance of the electrochromic film of tungsten trioxide thin film. However, if the treatment temperature is too low, the WO3 film will have insufficient adhesion with larger cavity. And it is not resistant to acid and alkali. Therefore, the optimum heat treatment temperature should be selected - 220°C. When the heat treatment temperature of the tungsten trioxide film is lower than 220°C, it is amorphous, and above this heat treatment temperature, it begins to be converted into a crystalline state.
