Amorphous tungsten trioxide film is superior in electrochromic properties to the crystalline tungsten trioxide film. But why?
According to experts, this is because amorphous tungsten trioxide is composed of a three-dimensional disordered network structure connected by W-O octahedrons. In addition to the quadrilateral tunnels present in the crystalline WO3 structure, there are also trigonal tunnels, pentagonal tunnels hexagonal tunnels, which will facilitate the migration of conductive ions. So, the amorphous tungsten trioxide thin film has better electrochromic properties than the crystalline tungsten trioxide film.

Experts also said that although amorphous tungsten oxide film has higher coloring efficiency, faster coloring/fading conversion time and good reversibility, it lacks chemical stability. And its performance begins to decrease after repeated cycles. In other words, the amorphous tungsten trioxide film has poor durability. And therefore, experts are looking for the ways to deal with this problem to produce a better amorphous tungsten trioxide thin film.
