Molybdenum Market - September 10, 2025

Molybdenum market update on September 10, 2025

The domestic molybdenum market is experiencing a high-level gradual decline and consolidation trend. With declining steel tender volumes and prices, along with the gradual exhaustion of favorable factors, the seller’s market advantage has weakened, primarily reflected in insufficient upward momentum for most molybdenum product prices and slight price drops for some products.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, influenced by reduced downstream inquiries, accelerated growth in spot supply, and a lackluster international molybdenum market, some suppliers have slightly lowered their quotes. On September 9, a mine in Luanchuan, Henan, sold 80 tons of Mo50-55% molybdenum concentrate at a transaction price of 4,590 yuan per ton-unit and 20 tons of Mo40-43% molybdenum concentrate at a transaction price of 4,500 yuan per ton-unit.

In the ferromolybdenum market, the situation remains challenging, with intermediate smelting enterprises caught between modest declines in molybdenum concentrate prices and persistent downward pressure on ferromolybdenum purchase prices from steel companies. Quotes are adjusting within a narrow range. Today, ferromolybdenum prices decreased by approximately 1,000 yuan per ton to around 293,000 yuan per ton.

In the molybdenum chemical and product markets, a strong wait-and-see atmosphere prevails. With a relatively balanced supply-demand pattern, market trading activity remains low, and product prices show no significant changes. Today, the prices of sodium molybdate, ammonium heptamolybdate, and molybdenum powder are approximately 206,000 yuan per ton, 280,000 yuan per ton, and 520 yuan per kilogram, respectively.

In terms of news, according to customs data, in August 2025, China imported 500,000 tons of steel, increased by 10.6% month-on-month, with an average price of 1,851.6 USD per ton, increased by 2.5% month-on-month; exported 9,510,000 tons of steel, decreased by 3.3% month-on-month, with an average price of 698.0 USD per ton, decreased by 0.6% month-on-month. From January to August 2025, China’s cumulative steel imports totaled 3,977,000 tons, decreased by 14.1% year-on-year; cumulative steel exports reached 77,490,000 tons, increased by 10.0% year-on-year.
