Molybdenum market update on July 24, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market is maintaining a high-level sideways trend, with product prices showing no significant changes and actual transaction volumes remaining decent, as traders generally adhere to rigid trading practices.
Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and molybdenum oxide are approximately 4,000 yuan per ton-unit, 254,000 yuan per ton, and 4,130 yuan per ton-unit, respectively.
From the supply side, firstly, factors such as intensified environmental enforcement, frequent high-temperature and rainy weather, high energy prices, and declining ore grades have slowed the capacity release of some molybdenum manufacturers. Secondly, relatively lower overseas molybdenum prices and stronger purchasing power of the yuan are favorable for increasing China’s molybdenum product imports. In the first half of 2025, China’s cumulative molybdenum product imports totaled 41,101.50 tons, increased by 22.19% year-on-year; in June, imports reached 6,480.06 tons, increased by 30.06% month-on-month and 42.87% year-on-year.
From the demand side, firstly, the rapid development of industries such as new energy vehicles, wind power generation, military, and aerospace aviation has led to a high demand for high-performance steel, subsequently increasing the demand for ferromolybdenum. As of now, the total ferromolybdenum tender volume in July has exceeded 11,000 tons. Secondly, amid China’s special operation to combat the smuggling and export of strategic minerals and with domestic molybdenum prices at high levels, China’s molybdenum product exports have slightly decreased. In the first half of 2025, China’s cumulative molybdenum product exports totaled 19,220.53 tons, decreased by 3.86% year-on-year; in June, exports reached 1,753.98 tons, decreased by 55.66% month-on-month and 49.20% year-on-year.
In terms of news, customs data shows that in the second quarter of 2025, China’s molybdenum product imports totaled 19,808.31 tons, decreased by 6.97% quarter-on-quarter but increased by 12.38% year-on-year; the import value was 726 million yuan, decreased by 5.10% quarter-on-quarter but increased by 22.24% year-on-year. During the same period, China’s molybdenum product exports totaled 9,685.25 tons, increased by 1.57% quarter-on-quarter but decreased by 8.16% year-on-year; the export value was 2.036 billion yuan, decreased by 0.65% quarter-on-quarter and 14.08% year-on-year.
