Molybdenum market update on February 13, 2025

The domestic molybdenum market has remained relatively stable overall, with no significant changes observed. The interplay of both positive and negative factors has led to intense price negotiations between buyers and sellers, resulting in a strong wait-and-see sentiment in the market and limited actual transaction volumes.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, operations are under pressure. While downstream inquiries remain at an acceptable level, the gradual weakening of cost-driven price support and the strong price-cutting sentiment among steel companies have prompted suppliers to maintain mostly stable quotations, with some slightly lowering their prices. In the ferromolybdenum market, trading activity has been relatively active, primarily driven by steel companies entering the market to bid for ferromolybdenum. In the molybdenum chemical and related products market, operations have remained sideways, with product prices largely influenced by supply and demand dynamics. Currently, the prices of ammonium tetramolybdate and molybdenum powder are approximately RMB 224,000 per ton and RMB 425 per kilogram, respectively.

In terms of news, data from the Baotou Industry and Information Technology Bureau revealed that among the 14 steel products monitored in Baotou City, prices for 2 products increased month-on-month, while prices for 12 products declined. High-carbon ferrochrome experienced the largest drop, with an average price of RMB 7,600 per ton, down RMB 500 per ton from the previous month, a decrease of 6.2%. Year-on-year, prices for all 14 products fell, with channel steel recording the largest decline at an average price of RMB 3,374 per ton, down RMB 753 per ton from the previous year, a decrease of 18.2%. Pig iron saw the smallest drop, with an average price of RMB 2,854 per ton, down RMB 246 per ton from the previous year, a decrease of 7.9%.
