Prices of Light and Heavy Rare Earths - December 8, 2023

The overall situation in the rare earth market this week is relatively weak, influenced by various uncertainties. Prices of light and heavy rare earths show divergent trends. 

Specifically, prices of praseodymium and neodymium have fluctuated downward, with a larger decrease compared to the previous week, while prices of dysprosium and terbium have remained relatively stable.

According to information from Chinatungsten Online, the current price of praseodymium and neodymium oxide has decreased by approximately 19,000 yuan per ton compared to last week, a decrease of 3.92%. The price of praseodymium and neodymium metal has decreased by about 18,000 yuan per ton, a decrease of 3.04%. The price of terbium oxide has decreased by about 50 yuan per kilogram, a decrease of 0.63%. 

The price of dysprosium oxide has increased by about 20,000 yuan per ton, an increase of 0.74%. The price of 55N neodymium iron boron blanks remains unchanged from last week, while the price of neodymium iron boron waste containing praseodymium and neodymium has decreased by about 20 yuan per kilogram, a decrease of 3.92%. It is worth noting that, influenced by the decline in the selling price of praseodymium and neodymium raw materials, the quotation for neodymium iron boron waste has also decreased.

The main factors affecting the rare earth market this week include the lack of improvement in downstream demand, relatively sufficient supply of some rare earth raw materials in the spot market, strong awareness of realization among many suppliers approaching the end of the year, and the steady month-on-month listing price of Northern Rare Earth. Additionally, China is gradually improving the layout of the rare earth waste recycling industry chain.

In terms of news, according to Economic Daily, a recent State Council executive meeting discussed and studied relevant work to promote the high-quality development of the rare earth industry. Experts pointed out that it is necessary to accelerate the establishment of a new rare earth security system to ensure the safety, stability, and continuous supply of rare earths. Breakthroughs in key technologies for the efficient comprehensive utilization of valuable elements in low-grade complex light rare earths, rare metal ores, light rare earth tailings, and solid waste in tailing ponds containing rare earths and rare elements should be achieved to realize the high-efficiency utilization of valuable elements in rare earth resources.
