There are several metal alloys to choose from for a wedding band. Gold -- both white- and yellow-colored -- is very common, though it is soft and scratches easily.

Titanium and tungsten are the most durable metals. They appear more rugged and industrial and are a popular modern choice for men's bands. Though the two metals look similarly, they have different weights; tungsten is very heavy while titanium is rather lightweight.

Platinum and palladium are more durable than gold, but not quite as durable as tungsten or titanium. They are very shiny and are also the most expensive metals used in jewelry.
