Be familiar with the terms when shopping for a Ring

Be familiar with the terms that you'll be confronted with when shopping for a ring. Giving the impression that you know what you're looking for will increase your confidence and help you to ward off any disreputable ring sellers. Here are some of the terms to be familiar with:
Band: The band is the circular part of the ring that sits around the finger. It's usually made from gold, silver, or platinum, although it can be made from some other combination of metals. Gold is yellow-orange in its natural state and is normally alloyed with another metal for durability. Some prefer the lighter yellow color of less-pure gold such as 14K or 10K. "White gold" is gold alloyed with metals purposely to give the mixture an off-white color and must be plated with another metal--rhodium is common--for a bright silvery appearance. The plating wears off; some jewelers will replate their rings from time to time for free. Platinum is hard, strong and naturally silvery but will dull slightly from a mirror finish over time with wear, which is not necessarily a problem. Since a gold setting will make a diamond look very slightly yellowish, it is a waste of money to buy a very high color grade diamond to put in it.
Setting: The setting refers to the piece that holds the gemstone in place, which is attached to the band. The setting can be "pronged" or "invisible".[1] Some rings combine a platinum setting with a gold band for the special background color of gold and the contrast, lack of diamond-tinting, and strength of platinum. A setting with a bezel, or at least six prongs for some redundancy, can be safer for a ring that is likely to be worn during significant activity.
Gemstone: The gemstone is the feature piece of the ring, usually a diamond. Occasionally, this is facetiously referred to as a "rock". The bigger the stone, the better according to many, although it's more important to go with your girlfriend's personality and preferences rather than assuming this. The gemstone doesn't have to be a diamond (see below) but reasons for deviating from this should be good ones!
The 4 C's: These are the carat, color, clarity and cut of the gemstone (usually a diamond).
The 5th C: Cost. A cubic zirconia can be beautiful and indistinguishable from a diamond only by a jeweler or other expert. It is softer than a real diamond so it may dull over the years. Lab Diamonds are another great alternative to traditional diamonds. Generally cost 5-10% of what a traditional diamond would, and looking just a beautiful, they definitely deserve some research. A rhodium-plated silver ring can be indistinguishable (except for the identifying mark an honest seller should put on the inside) from a rhodium-plated white-gold one. These can be a good option for a couple with little money up front. An alternative is a smallish real diamond (the price goes up very fast with size, so a very nice one of less than a half-carat, whose face area will be more than half of that of a one-carat diamond, will be a few hundred dollars) in a simple real gold ring.

How to Break a Tungsten Carbide Ring
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Thursday, 24 April 2014 11:48
You may have heard that a tungsten carbide ring is unbreakable. This would have some good and bad effects. Having a wedding ring that would never bend, crack, scratch, or get marred would be a benefit. Tungsten carbide rings are not indestructible. In case of emergency, you can remove them with relative ease. Just don't drop your wedding band on a hard surface - any Tungsten Carbide band (no matter who makes it) is brittle. It will crack, chip or even shatter upon impact with a hard surface or object.
1.Get a vise.
2.Place your finger down inside the vise. Make sure the ring is in the middle of the vise.
3.Tighten the vise. Tighten the vise until it grips the ring well.
4.Break the ring. Give the vise a good final twist to crack the ring apart.
5.Loosen the vise. Loosen the vise a bit.
6.Pull out your hand. Remove your hand from the vise. The ring is broken! Hopefully not your vows!

How to Find Your Ring Size
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Tuesday, 22 April 2014 11:20
While the most precise way to find your ring size is to have a jeweler do it, you can easily do it at home. Whether you're sizing your finger to buy a ring online, or want to surprise your sweetie with an engagement ring, these two methods have you covered.
Printable Ring Sizer
This ring sizer works for an 8"x11" piece of paper. Be sure your page scaling is set to "none."
Method 1 of 2: Finding Your Ring Size Using Paper or String
1.Cut a strip of paper or a piece of string. The paper strip should be approximately 1/2" wide, and 5" long.
2.Wrap the paper or string around the finger to be sized. Slide the paper or string up to the knuckle, as the ring must be sized large enough to able to slip off and on, over the knuckle.
3.Use a pen to mark the string or paper where the long end overlaps.
4.Measure the mark from the end of the length of paper or string with a ruler. Use the metric side for more accurate sizing.
5.Locate your ring size by locating your measurement on the printed chart. If the measurement falls in between two sizes, it is recommended that you choose the larger size.

How to Make a Cluster Ring
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Tuesday, 22 April 2014 11:18
This article shows how to make a pearl cluster ring, but you can use silver, gold, semi-precious stones, resin, metal clay, polymer clay and other materials at home to create wonderful, fun rings to wear or sell.
1Using the wire tools, bend the thicker wire into a half ring shape. Don’t overwork the wire. It will tend to become hard and brittle if you bend it too much - use smooth, minimal movements. This half ring should comfortably fit around the finger. Twist one end into a small loop. Try the half ring on and mark where the other loop should be. Both loops should not be above the top of the finger.
2.Twist and turn the second loop to match the first loop in size. If necessary, file the ends of the wire to remove any rough edges. Pinch the loops closed. Twist the loops so they are facing the sides of the ring.
3.Take a long strand of the thin wire and tie the middle of the strand around one loop. Lay the pearls out in the dish or towel so you can see them and decide which one will be in the center. The largest one looks best in the middle with smaller ones on the outside.
4.Begin stringing different pearls and pull the wire through the other loop to create the base string. Try the ring on for size. It should fit comfortably over the knuckle. Adjust if necessary. Make all future strings of pearls no tighter than the base string.
5.Now string the other wire and position the large pearl in the middle. Again be careful not to make this wire too tight. Keep the strands together by pulling a wire around the strands here and there. You should have at least three strands (an uneven number) going across so that the large pearl stays in the middle.
6.String as many pearls as you want and occasionally tie the strands together. You may like the look of the silver wires criss-crossing around the pearls; they will hold the pearls in place. Tie the two wire ends on the inside of the ring with a couple of knots to secure them. Tuck the wire ends into the cluster out of sight and trim with scissors or wire cutters if necessary. another option would be stringing in the pearls together and rolling it out to form a cluster. Place it in position and weave another wire mesh around the cluster and the the lose end of the mesh wire to the loops of the wire around your finger.
7.If the beads are not bearing any sort of holes, you can still cluster it up by gluing in the pieces together with a hot glue gun. (Make sure that it does not react with the stones or assortment you are using.) Now weave a wire mesh around the glued and dried cluster. Make sure the ends of the wire mesh are long enough to be looped around the thicker finger wire.

Using the Quick Dip Method to Clean a Diamond Ring
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Tuesday, 22 April 2014 11:13
1.Buy a quick dip meant for the type of diamond ring you own. Quick dips are commercially available solutions designed to quickly clean jewelry. Different dips are made with different chemicals specifically formulated for gold, silver, or other metals. Be sure to pick out a dip that specifies use for cleaning diamond rings with the type of setting you have.
2.Read the label carefully. It's important to follow the instructions for using the quick dip to a T, so that you don't end up damaging your ring. Read the instructions and make sure you're clear on how to use the dip before you proceed.
3.Use the dip. Pour some of the dip liquid into a bowl. Place your ring in the bowl for the recommended amount of time, and no longer. Remove your ring from the bowl and let it completely dry on a soft cloth.
Don't leave your ring in the dip for longer than recommended, or it may get damaged.
Don't touch the diamond with your fingers until it dries. The oils on your skin may leave a film on the diamond.

How to Safely Clean a Diamond Ring
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Tuesday, 22 April 2014 11:02
Keeping your diamond ring brilliant is simple to do with a few household supplies. You might have heard that baking soda and toothpaste are good solutions for cleaning rings, but they can actually be quite abrasive. Using gentle, nonabrasive cleansers is is a much safer way to get the job done.
Using Soapy Water
Make a soap and water mixture. Squirt a little dish soap into a bowl. Fill the bowl with warm water. Swish it around a bit to produce some suds.
1.Use a gentle dish soap, preferably one made with natural ingredients, to avoid harming your ring with chemicals.
Gentle hand soap, shampoo, or body wash may also be used. Be sure not to use a soap that contains "moisturizers," though - it might leave a film on your ring.
2.Place your ring in the bowl for 15 minutes. Let the soapy water soak into the ring. It will penetrate and loosen the dirt, dust and grime that has built up there.
3.Remove your ring and examine it. If you can still see dirt buildup, you'll need to clean it further. Otherwise, you can rinse your ring in clean water.
4.Use a soft toothbrush to gently rub the dirt from your ring. Make sure you use a soft-bristled brush, rather than medium or hard-bristled, so that your ring doesn't get scratched. Scrub lightly, poking the bristles into the hard-to-reach crevices.
You can use a toothpick to poke dirt out of the crevices if necessary.
5.Rinse the ring in cool water.
Lay it out to dry. Place your ring on a paper towel or clean cloth and let it completely dry.

How to Break off an Engagement
- Details
- Category: Tungsten Jewelry News & Info
- Published on Thursday, 17 April 2014 09:10
1.Think about why you want to break it off. Is your fiance(e) not the person you thought they were? If this is the case, be thankful you found out before the wedding! Are you just not ready to get married? Come up with some good reasons why you want to end your relationship, or engagement.
2.Talk to friends and family. They can offer you helpful advice to get through this tough situation. They may have been through the same situation or know someone else who went through this.
3.Research using books or the Internet. Finding relationship experts and asking questions can help make breaking off a lot easier on you and your fiance(e). Some radio stations have relationship experts you can call in to ask questions. Take advantage of this opportunity.
4.Break the news to your fiance(e), and be considerate of their feelings. This may have come as a surprise to them, or maybe they saw this coming. Your fiance(e) will probably be as devastated as you are. Try to talk it through calmly. If they get upset, give them some time and space so they can calm down.
5.Think ahead to what you will do after you end the engagement. Will you end the relationship? Will you start dating again? Make sure to discuss these questions with your former fiance(e), because they need to know what's going on.
