Australia to Build Super Lithium Battery Factory with 15 Billion Yuan

Australia wants to build a super lithium battery factory. Recently, Magnis Energy Technologies, an Australia graphite company headquartered in New South Wales, announced that the Queensland Government has approved the company's plan to build a super lithium battery plant in Townsville for 3 billion AUD (approximately RMB 14.9 billion). The Queensland government has allocated 3.1 million AUD (about 15.52 million yuan) for this purpose. According to the foreign reports.

The plant is built by Imperium3 Townsville (iM3TSV) and has received investment from companies such as Magnis, Charge CCCV (C4V), and Boston Energy. It will produce 32,700 cylindrical batteries. In addition, it plans to start construction in 2022 and put it into operation in 2024.  The project will be constructed in three stages with a total capacity of 18gwh and will be further expanded according to market demand.

32700 cylindrical battery refers to a type of lithium battery, that is, the diameter of the battery is 32mm, the length is 70mm, and 0 symbols a cylindrical battery. Compared with the 21700 and 18650 batteries, the 32700 battery has a larger size, higher energy density, and faster-charging speed. If Magnis can commercialize the 32700 battery technology, it is expected to make the country a leader in the field of power battery technology.

Australia is a world leader in battery material mining. In terms of lithium resources, Australian lithium metal output surpassed its Latin American competitors and accounted for 43.49% of global output; in terms of cobalt resources, the country accounted for 4.55% of global cobalt metal output (the DRC accounts for 58.18%), making it the third-largest cobalt metal producer in the world; in terms of manganese resources, Australian manganese ore reserves account for 13.84% of the whole world, ranking the fourth in the world.

In the energy storage market, Australia has built a number of large-scale lithium battery energy storage projects and is now the world's largest lithium energy storage market. Recently, Australian public utility company AGL announced that it planned to purchase an 850 MW battery energy storage system through bidding; the Australian federal government just announced that it was rapidly following up a renewable energy project, which included 10 GW of photovoltaic power and 30 GWH of battery energy storage, with a total cost of 22 billion AUD (about 16 billion US dollars).

Therefore, if the construction of the graphite company's super lithium battery factory can be completed, it will greatly enhance the competitiveness of Australia’s batteries in the international market.
