Utah Physicists Invent ‘Spintronic’ LED

University of Utah physicists invented a new “spintronic” organic light-emitting diode or OLED that promises to be brighter, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than the kinds of LEDs now used in television and computer displays, lighting, traffic lights and numerous electronic devices.

“It’s a completely different technology,” says Z. Valy Vardeny, University of Utah distinguished professor of physics and senior author of a study of the new OLEDs in the July 13, 2012 issue of the journal Science. “These new organic LEDs can be brighter than regular organic LEDs.”

The Utah physicists made a prototype of the new kind of LED – known technically as a spin-polarized organic LED or spin OLED – that produces an orange color. But Vardeny expects it will be possible within two years to use the new technology to produce red and blue as well, and he eventually expects to make white spin OLEDs.

However, it could be five years before the new LEDs hit the market because right now, they operate at temperatures no warmer than about minus 28 degrees Fahrenheit, and must be improved so they can run at room temperature, Vardeny adds.

Organic spin valves are comprised of three layers: an organic layer that acts as a semiconductor and is sandwiched between two metal electrodes that are ferromagnets. In the new spin OLED, one of the ferromagnet metal electrodes is made of cobalt and the other one is made of a compound called lanthanum strontium manganese oxide. The organic layer in the new OLED is a polymer known as deuterated-DOO-PPV, which is a semiconductor that emits orange-colored light. (Excerpt from University of Utah News)

Edge-defined Film-fed Growth

As the picture shows the principles of the crystal growth:

With raw materials placed in the the iridium crucible, raw materials is heated to melt with radio frequency induction heating coil. Then place an Iridium-mold within the intermediate of the crucible. Let the-Acting Soup stalls sq. within the surface of the the iridium-Built mold then forming a thin film. Put down crystalspecies so to touch the film and the film crystallized into a single crystal from the surface of the seed crystal with the same structure of the seed crystal. The seed crystal then slowly pull up and gradually grow into single crystal.

At the same time, Crucible provids melt soup for film. Since the edge of the film is defined by the iridium mold and continue feeding for the growth of crystal, so it was called Defined Edge-defined Film-fed Growth, short for EFG.

Dow Corning Showcases Benefits of High-Performance Silicones for Next-Generation LED Designs

Pittsfield, MA, May 04, 2013 –(PR.com)– On display at the company’s booth, LED applications and live demonstrations are spotlighting how high-performance silicones contribute to improved efficiencies, greater design freedom and enhanced productivity.

“Advanced LED light sources are fueling rapid global demand for innovative new materials that perform under very harsh conditions, especially high temperatures and power densities,” said Eric Peeters, vice president, Dow Corning Electronic Solutions. “As a dedicated collaboration and innovation partner, Dow Corning is joining with our customers to meet this demand with LED silicone technologies. In this way, we can play an active role in helping them to drive the cost-effective and reliable development of true next-generation LED devices.”

Offering excellent optical-quality and a variety of refractive index values, Dow Corning silicones allow designers to more effectively shape light and improve efficiency. Plus, the outstanding thermal stability intrinsic to these materials enables them to retain their excellent transparency and color quality even after prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding 150ºC. Thus, compared to organic polymers like polycarbonate and acrylic, silicones provide a more effective hedge against heat-induced yellowing of optical elements in high-intensity lamp and luminaire designs.

Greater design flexibility is another major benefit that silicones provide. Today’s LED lamps and luminaires may already incorporate over ten different silicone-based solutions, including adhesives, pottants, encapsulants, thermal management materials and optics. Yet, the high clarity and excellent moldability of Dow Corning’s optical-grade materials enables LED manufacturers to achieve even broader design options, including more complex shapes, micro-scale optical structures and even undercuts that are difficult to achieve with plastics or glass. These qualities also expand design latitude for other optical elements, including secondary lenses, reflectors, light pipes, light guides and other high-performing optical components.

The Dow Corning booth is featuring three demonstration stations that illustrate these critical benefits using the company’s broad portfolio of advanced LED silicones. They include a station highlighting how the materials enhance LED optical efficiency; a second demonstration station showcasing the tremendous design flexibility of silicone products; and a third featuring an injection molding machine producing optical silicone components to underscore the exceptional processability of these materials.

As the market leader in encapsulants for LED packaging, Dow Corning innovates high-performance silicon-based materials for the next generation of lighting designs. Dow Corning Lighting Solutions spans the entire value chain, adding reliability and efficiency for sealing, protecting, adhering, cooling, and shaping light across all lighting applications. LED lights give vitamin C boost to tomatoes

Growing tomatoes exposed to extra light from LED lamps may produce more vitamin C, according to Dutch researchers from Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture.

In collaboration with Philips, the scientists tested various tomato varieties and various levels of light intensity.

The fruit were exposed to extra “sunlight” via hanging lights that lluminated clusters typically hidden in the shade of the plant’s leaves.

The variety with the biggest reaction showed twice as much vitamin C content for fruit exposed to the lights as for those that were not.

The light exposure in this particular case was described as a quarter of the natural light intensity on a sunny day.

The research program will continue on in a new joint facility in Bleiswijk dedicated to investigating LED lamps in horticulture. Research has begun on other fruit and vegetables as well to determine the light’s impact on nutritional value and flavor. (By FreshFruitPortal)

Shifting Sands Power Stellar LED Lights by Danielle Trofe

The only thing more abundant than sun in the Middle East and North Africa is sand. Used in the production of Markus Kayser’s 3D printer and to make Algerian building bricks, sand is useful for a host of applications – including lighting.

We would never have dreamed this up ourselves, but Danielle Trofe designed a series of new sustainable lamps that are literally powered by shifting sands. Hit the jump to find out how they work.

Like a small hourglass, Trope's lamps trickle sand through a glass vessel, marking the passage of time. But the kinetic energy generated by the process also generates just enough power to spark an embedded LED light bulb.

Unlike normal lamps that switch on and stay on, unless they are digitally pre-programmed to switch off, these lamps are interactive. Every time the lamp runs out of sand, it is necessary to flip the lamp to start the process again.

In part this helps to generate some awareness of what it takes to keep the lights on, and in a city like New York that never dims, one lamp multiplied can have an incredible cumulative impact.

The four foot Hourglass Floor Table Lamp is suspended and rotates on a hinge that makes it easy to flip when the sand runs out.

The smaller, table version that is designed a little differently to accommodate the light bulb, is nonetheless built with the same principle.

And both are infinitely cool – not just in concept but in execution. Flawless. (By Green Prophet)

China cutting back subsidies to LED sector

The Chinese government has been cutting back on subsidies to manufacturers of light-emitting diode (LED) chips, a reason some companies are blaming for their poor first quarter results.

This points to a change in approach to policies over the once-hyped sector amid overcapacity and sliding prices, noted a report Wednesday by Global Times.

Chinese listed firms, such as Elec-Tech International, issued a profit warning last month in its first quarter earnings report, the news site said. The company forecast net profits for the first half of the year would drop 30 to 60 percent year-on-year, partly because of a sharp drop-off in subsidy funding it expected

Elec-Tech added government support for LED chip makers had weakened overall with the gradual curtailing or scrapping of payouts for new equipment.

Another LED chip maker Sanan Optoelectronics described a similar situation in its own quarterly report, according to People's Daily. The company blamed lost subsidies as a key factor behind its 29.5 percent profit drop over the first three months of the year.

Global Times cited a report from 21st Century Business Herald that Sanan Optoelectronics received government subsidies totaling 328 million yuan (US$53.3 million) in 2012, 805 million yuan (US$131 million) in 2011 and 2.53 million yuan (US$411,890) in 2010; with these amounts accounting for 40.5 percent, 85 percent and 60.4 percent of its net profits respectively during those years.

For Elec-Tech, it would likely have suffered losses in 2010 and 2012 if not for subsidies, the report pointed out.

Wang Hong, a professor at South China University of Technology, explained the industry underwent a period of consolidation last year, nearly one-third of China's LED chip makers shut down. This may have led several local governments to reconsider their earlier policies and offers.

For example in March, Shenzhen city in Southern China axed a seven-year development plan to turn itself into the largest LED research, development and production center in China.

Earlier this month, China reportedly cut its solar subsidies program by 21 percent to 5.5 yuan (US$0.87) per watt, as compontent prices had plunged making them unncessary. However, this does not rule out other forms of assistance such as tax rebates and property concessions. (By ZDNet)

LED bulb included in the ranks of state subsidies for the first time

Recently, Lu Fang, the director of out of incandescent PMO of National Development and Reform Commission, said, the promotion of LED lighting products will reach 30 million this year. Types of products covered in addition to the tunnel lights, street lamps, downlights and spotlights, an increase of bulb this year.

"The LED Bulb subsidies issued by the National Development and Reform Commission, is also a sub-brand." A lighting person in charge, Ma Yinwei said, his agents lighting brand - such as Opple lighting - have not been included in the national LED bulb subsidies ranks.

"Even if not included in the financial subsidies, the cost performance of LED bulb is still high." Ma Yinwei calculations to reporters, on the basis of LED bulb used an annual, initial purchase cost plus annual electricity bill should be lower than the cost of the incandescent lamp and electronic energy-saving lamps. And service life of LED bulb is up to 100,000 hours.

New Longer Lasting LED Recessed Light from LED Waves

LED lighting supplier and manufacturer LED Waves has announced a performance-enhancing redesign to their top-selling downlight fixture made in the USA. The Midtown™ 2.1 LED Recessed Light features a slightly longer aluminum heat sink than the one found on its predecessor.

This redesign is purely mechanical, with no change to the light quality or wiring of the unit. The Midtown™ 2.1 LED Recessed Light is still a 9 Watt replacement for a 50 Watt halogen spotlight, built with three Cree XT-E chips. Like the 2.0 version, it is available in white, silver or matte black housing, and looks the same when installed in a ceiling. Both units come with a line voltage driver and may be dimmed using a dimmable LED power supply and a 12v LED driver.

The redesign of the Midtown™ follows the thermal management philosophy LED Waves applies to all their LED lights built exclusively in-house. Each product has a heat sink composed of slender, lightweight aluminum blades. By augmenting this part, LED Waves has increased surface area along which heat dissipates. This cooling method relieves stress on the electrical components, lengthening the life of the entire LED lamp.

Though the result is a slightly higher profile, the company’s R&D team points out that the redesign adds approximately 5,000 hours to the operating life of the LED recessed light. Additionally, since the extrusion process for the new heat sink is slightly less expensive, online shoppers will notice that the per unit price of the Midtown™ 2.1 is one dollar less than that of the 2.0.

As past customers may have come to rely on the dimensions of the original Midtown™, LED Waves will continue to stock the 2.0 version alongside the 2.1 in order to meet demand for the near future. Since these products are assembled in the USA, both are eligible for the company’s extended 5 year warranty. The same order options (housing color; color temperatures of warm, neutral, or cool white; beam spreads of 8, 15, 30 or 45 degrees) apply to both versions. Lighting specifiers are urged to call 1(800)986-0169 to reserve quantities for large projects. (By PRWeb)
