If the next light bulb you buy is an LED, it may be your last.
The technology behind light-emitting diodes has advanced to the point that the bulbs can replace traditional 40- and 60-watt light bulbs and last up to 25 times longer.
"You're going to see people say, 'I'm taking my light bulbs with me to my new home,'" says Bill Nottingham of Nottingham Spirk, a Cleveland-based industrial design company that's working on LED lighting technology.
Traditional light bulbs are on the way out. The U.S. mandated a phaseout of the most common wattages of incandescent bulbs; inefficient 100-, 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs will not be sold after 2014.
And the future looks bright for the LED market. Now old-school manufacturers like GE and Philips and younger players like Feit Electric, Cree and Elite are battling it out for shelf space in the lighting sections at big-box stores.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY OLD BULBS?
Dating back to Thomas Edison, incandescent light bulbs mostly produced heat instead of light. Over the last two decades, halogens and compact fluorescents have improved the energy efficiency of bulbs. But they're no match for LED technology. LEDs last up to 10 times longer than compact fluorescents while providing the same amount of light. And, unlike other bulbs, LEDs put off only a small amount of heat and rarely break.
SOUNDS GREAT. WHAT'S THE CATCH?
In a word: price. While an eight-pack of incandescents costs about $3 at the local big-box store, a single LED bulb can cost between $20 and $50. The high price tag may make it too expensive to outfit your entire home with LEDs at once. But while you're making the switch, test out bulbs from different manufacturers to see what works best for you.
Forecasters expect prices to drop as technology improves. "As you see price points drop to the $8 to $10 range, you'll start to see some real adoption there," says Joe Gullo, a former GE lighting executive who's now leading Rambus, an LED designer. "That's probably four to five years out."
SO WHAT SHOULD A CONSUMER DO?
Know that LEDs are getting better and cheaper all the time—and, no matter the price, they're a good investment. They'll save you money on your electric bill and the cost of buying new bulbs. Plus they open you up to some neat uses of wireless technology: Imagine dimming your lights from an iPhone app instead of a wall switch.
"LEDs are 'chip-on-board' products; you can control LEDs without even using a light switch. [You'll be able] to turn your lights on and off remotely. You can decide what type of light temperature you want in your home. This is the next generation," says Mark Voykovic, The Home Depot light bulb expert. (By USA TODAY)

Silicon-based nanoparticles could make LEDs cheaper, greener to produce

Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, are the most efficient and environmentally friendly light bulbs on the market. But they come at a higher up-front price than other bulbs, especially the ones with warmer and more appealing hues.
Researchers at the University of Washington have created a material they say would make LED bulbs cheaper and greener to manufacture, driving down the price. Their silicon-based nanoparticles soften the blue light emitted by LEDs, creating white light that more closely resembles sunlight.
The company, LumiSands, started as a graduate student project for CEO Chang-Ching Tu, who received his doctorate in electrical engineering at the UW and just completed a stint as a postdoctoral researcher in materials science and engineering. This spring, the start-up company spun out from the UW Center for Commercialization, a process that its two founders hope will lead to signing a commercialization license for the technology.
LEDs give off light when electrons move through a semiconductor material. They are more efficient than standard incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, but they’re also pricier. That’s partly because within each LED lamp, expensive substances known as rare-earth-element phosphors help to soften the harsh blue light that LEDs naturally emit.
But these rare-earth elements are hazardous to extract and process. China controls nearly all of the market for these materials, which has quadrupled the average price for the past several years.
That’s where LumiSands comes in. The company uses silicon, derived from sand, instead of rare-earth elements to convert part of the blue light emitted by LEDs into greens, yellows and reds. The resulting light looks more like sunlight. (By UW Today)

LED traffic lights in Lincolnshire bid to save £60k per year

Lincolnshire Highways Alliance is installing over 1,400 low-energy LED light systems in traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to make them greener and to save money.
The project is paid for using the the Salix Fund, which is an interest-free loan for councils to help improve energy efficiency.
Tim Clark, traffic signals manager, said: “The new LED light systems will be up to six times more energy efficient.
“We estimate that they will reduce carbon emissions by 300 tonnes every year.
“Hopefully they will last about ten years, which will deliver an energy saving of about £60,000 each year.
“The light systems are the latest technology on the market and we are installing them in about a third of the light signals that exist on our county’s entire road network.
“We started replacing the lamp units in March and hope to complete the work by September.
“We would like to upgrade them all, but at some sites the technology is not compatible, however we will install new LED lights as standard at all new sites.”
Lincolnshire County Council spent over £1.4 million on energy projects in council offices, schools, Fire and Rescue HQ, Lincoln Central Library, The Collection and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.
Senior sustainability officer Steve Golightly said: “The energy saving measures we have invested in to date have reduced the authority’s carbon footprint by over 1,500 tonnes of CO2 each year – that’s about the same weight as 128 double-decker buses – while also delivering an annual saving in excess of £300,000.
“On average, it takes about four years to recover the money we invest through energy savings,” he added. (By The Lincolnite)

UL Expands Zhaga Testing Capabilities For LED Light Source Interchangeability

UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science leader, announced today it has been named an authorized testing laboratory for three new Zhaga Books; Zhaga Interface Specification Book 4: High-intensity LED light engines, Zhaga Interface Specification Book 7: Indoor light engines with separate electronic control gear and Zhaga Interface Specification Book 8: Socketable LED light engine with integrated control gear (85 mm base).
Zhaga is an industry-wide cooperation aimed at enabling the interchangeability of LED light sources made by different manufacturers, as well as developing standard specifications for these sources. "UL is proud to be a trusted authorized Zhaga Test Center and member of the Consortium Steering Committee," said Todd Straka, Global Director, UL Lighting. "These additional book authorizations illustrate our growing commitment to assisting in the global adoption and use of high-quality and efficient LED Lighting products," added Straka.
Zhaga standards cover the physical dimensions, as well as the photometric, electrical and thermal behavior, of LED light engines. Standardization is expected to prevent market fragmentation into incompatible products.
Book 4 defines the interfaces of a type-D LED light engine (non-socketable LED module with separate electronic control gear). This LED light engine is intended for applications that need a high-intensity light source, such as street lighting and industrial high-bay applications. Book 4 specifies a rectangular light-emitting surface in three variants, 30 mm x 7.5 mm, 42 mm x 10.5 mm, and 60 mm x 15 mm.
Book 7 defines the interfaces of a type-D LED light engine (non-socketable LED module with separate electronic control gear). Book 7 includes a range of indoor LED light engines with different form factors and is intended for applications such as indoor office lighting.
Book 8 defines a socketable light engine with integrated control gear - mainly used in downlight applications.
These three new book accreditations come in addition to the two books UL is already authorized to test for; Zhaga Interface Specification Book 2: Socketable LED light engine with integrated control gear (65-mm base) and Zhaga Interface Specification Book 3: Disc-shaped LED module with 9-23 mm light-emitting surface. Monkey Light Pro turns bicycle wheels into colorful, animated displays

There are plenty of interesting ways to deck out your bicycle, but MonkeyLectric may have come up with the ultimate way to make it stand out on the road. The company's new Monkey Light Pro is a set of LED bars that attach to a bicycle wheel and can be programmed to play colorful animations.
This isn't the first light-up bicycle wheel system we've seen, and MonkeyLectric itself has produced other models in the past, but none have been as elaborate as this. Over the last two years, the company has been hand-making prototypes of the newer system for special events and projects. During that time, the developers practiced their manufacturing processes with smaller products until they felt ready to launch a more complex system.
The Monkey Light Pro features four bars sporting a total of 256 full-color LEDs, which fit together inside the spokes and display bright images over the entire wheel when it's in motion. Riders can upload still graphics or short animations via Bluetooth and watch them light up on both sides when the bike reaches 10 to 40 mph (15 to 65 km/h). The setup also includes a two-axis accelerometer and four magnetic sensors to track a wheel's speed and rotation, ensuring the images remain stable when speeding up, slowing down, and even riding backwards.
It's designed to fit any 26 in (66 cm) or larger bicycle wheel, and includes a stainless steel anti-theft strap to keep it secure. The system is constructed from a durable clear urethane, keeping it protected from water, vibrations, and general day-to-day use. DOE announces $10.1M in Round 4 of new investments to drive cost-competitive LED lighting

As a response to the SSL Manufacturing R&D funding opportunity announcement made in December, the US. Department of Energy (DOE) has competitively selected five projects for solid-state lighting (SSL) to receive the fourth round of funding. The two-year projects will focus on reducing costs while maintaining quality by improving the quality and performance of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Total DOE funding for the five projects is $10.1 million, while the five companies will put in a matching $10.1 million investment.
"This partnership with industry to produce affordable, efficient lighting will save consumers money and create American jobs," said DOE Secretary Ernest Moniz. "It’s another example of how energy efficiency is a win-win proposition for our economy."
According to a new report by the Energy Department, LED lamps and fixtures installed in US have increased 10-fold over the last two years – from 4.5 million units in 2010 to 49 million units in 2012. These installations, which include common indoor and outdoor applications such as recessed lighting and streetlights, are expected to save about $675 million in annual energy costs. By 2030, LED lighting is projected to represent about 75% of all lighting sales, saving enough energy to power approximately 26 million US households.
Today’s LED lighting is much more efficient than conventional lighting and can last up to 25 times longer. LED life-cycle costs are attractive, but the initial price of LED and OLED lighting is currently higher than the price of traditional lighting. The five projects announced today will help reduce the cost in manufacturing equipment and processes, while improving lighting quality and performance:
Cree Inc., Durham, NC, with a $2.3 million DOE investment, will develop a modular design for LED lights that can link together multiple units to fit larger areas. Cree’s approach will focus on the design and manufacture the different components of an LED fixture as one, seamless product, helping to further reduce assembly costs and ensure strong performance.
Eaton Corporation, Menomonee Falls, WI, with a $2.4 million DOE investment will develop an innovative manufacturing process that streamlines the LED fixture design and removes unnecessary materials and parts. The LED chip can sit directly on the heatsink, improving heat transfer and increasing LED efficiency.
OLEDWorks, LLC, Rochester, NY, with a $1 million DOE investment, will develop and demonstrate new spray printing equipment that reduces overall manufacturing costs in OLEDs and may support cost-competitive mass production. This technique will give manufacturers greater spray control to take full advantage of expensive organic materials and maximize the visible light produced from this material.
Philips Lumileds, San Jose, CA, with a $1.8 million DOE investment, will develop an alternative to the standard flip-chip device that grows an LED face-down on the sapphire substrate. The Philips Lumileds device will treat the sapphire substrate so that the substrate does not need to be removed, which will reduce manufacturing costs without compromising lighting quality.
PPG Industries, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA, with a $2.3 million investment will develop a cost-effective OLED manufacturing process to help commercialize an integrated substrate that includes the glass foundation and other necessary layers. The project will also use standard grade glass, lowering costs while maintaining performance. Commercially-available and low-cost integrated substrates will help build a reliable supply chain. Comcast Corporation ( CMCSA ) - the largest cable Multi Service Operator (MSO) in the U.S. - has recently announced that it has struck a deal with OSRAM SYLVANIA. The Simplest Torch Is Just A Rolled Up Piece Of Paper

A torch is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it’s probably plastic and/or filled with DD batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.
Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There’s a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It’s not the first paper-light design we’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely the most wonderfully simple.
As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn’t seem to be on sale anywhere. But let’s face facts; it probably wouldn’t be a very good torch. Still, it’s a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a torch that could hide, you’d be hard-pressed to find something better. (By Gizmodo Australia)
