The lighting industry is a large, global and yet fragmented market place. The fragmentation is driven both by technology differentiation and customer need diversity. The technologies vying for market share include incandescent lamp, compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), halogen lamp, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and, most recently, organic light emitting diodes (OLED). The target markets are also very diverse, each service different needs and demanding different price points. These markets include residential, architectural, hospitality, shop, industrial, office, and outdoor.
OLED and LED lighting are both solid-state technologies and offer overlapping value propositions per market segment. They will therefore compete directly in many instances. LED lighting has come a long way and offers a better performance than OLEDs, and that at a lower cost. OLED lighting will therefore only gain market success if it clearly defines its unique selling points and carves out initial market niches.
This report is divided into two parts: (a) technology and (b) market assessment. The first offers a comprehensive yet detailed overview of both LED and OLED lighting, going through fabrication processes, material compositions, technology roadmaps, and key players. The device attributes of each technology are also critically assessed, examining parameters such as colour warmth and controllability, flexibility, efficiency, surface emission, lifetime, wafer size, and luminaire design.

More LED lamps to glow in Thiruvananthapuram

A demonstration project meant to replace the sodium vapour lights along the Vellayambalam-Vazhuthacaud stretch with Light Emitting Diode (LED)-based streetlights is showing signs of life after a hiatus of five years.
It was first proposed in 2008 by the Energy Management Cell (EMC), functioning under the Power Department. Sources in the cell told The Hindu that they were forced to retender the works, which led to the delay.

Now, such processes had been completed, and the work order to install 70 lights along the one-kilometre stretch would be issued by the end of this month.
The project was designed to highlight the benefits of the more power-saving option of LED lights. It was sidetracked after the Chennai-based company carrying out the project demanded higher payment in the middle of implementation. Three poles and six lights were installed near the Forest Office Headquarters then.
Once the work order is issued, the project will take only three months to materialise. The 100-watt LED lamps will save over 60 per cent power.
The project is being sponsored by the Union Government agency, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). This project and another initiative of the EMC being sponsored by the BEE were attempts to nudge the city towards a more energy efficient lighting regime, said Johnson Daniel, energy technologist with the EMC.
The technical evaluation of companies who responded to the tender to install 500 LED-based lamps along the Kazhakootam-Kovalam bypass route was also almost complete and the financial bidding would open by July, he said.
Each of these 45-watt lamps would replace the double-tube fittings that fringed the highway. Again, the power consumed would be less than half of the tubes and could make a significant difference in the bills accrued by the city Corporation.
The civic body, however, is still making its choice on which mode of power-saving to employ for the street lights in the city – LEDs or those fuelled by electromagnetic induction – before inviting Expressions of Interest. So, it may time another year before the 84,000 streetlights in the city is switched over to a power-saving mode.
The Corporation limits have benefited from another project of the EMC — to install 100 LED streetlights in 65 municipalities across the State.
This was carried out in the Attukal ward here in January. Ward councillor C. Jayan said there were no complaints about the lamps except that people initially thought they were dimmer.
The EMC also has plans to move towards attaching each light with an almanac-based automatic street lighting system that will ensure no wastage of electricity with on-off timings accurately programmed in. (By The Hindu)

Alleged 'iPhone 5S' Prototype Reveals A7 Chip, Dual LED Flash, Larger Battery

The Apple news space has been abuzz lately with photos of supposedly leaked parts from the upcoming "iPhone 5S," and today MacRumors essentially confirmed many of the associated rumors when it posted photos of an iPhone 5S prototype acquired through the Chinese parts network. It may not provide any of the design shocks that we saw when Gray Powell lost his iPhone 4 prototype at a bar back in 2006, but it does give us a good idea of what to expect.
Indeed, according to the photos, it might as well be a clone of the iPhone 5 as far as outward appearances go. The interior, however, presents a different story. Based on the photos, MacRumors deduced that the iPhone 5S will have a dual LED flash on the back, a larger battery (supporting 5.92 watt hours over the iPhone 5's 5.4), and it'll support an A7 chip. According to MacRumors:
"The original A6 chip carried a model number of APL0598, with the A6X found in the fourth-generation iPad carrying an APL5598 model number, demonstrating how Apple varies the first digit for members of a given A-series family and increments the second digit when transitioning to a new family."
Don't take that to mean it's a massive upgrade, though; apparently we'll still have the same 1GB of Elphida RAM that's on the A6 chip for the iPhone 5. What is interesting, however, is that the K1A0062 identifier doesn't have an "N" starting number, which normally signifies a Samsung part. This likely proves that Apple's already well along in its plans to stop using rival Samsung's parts in favor of those (possibly custom designed) by TSMC, and well ahead of schedule. Previous rumors suggested that we wouldn't see the transition until the A8 chip.
Keep in mind that while this appears to be a legitimate prototype, it's always possible that we'll see something significantly different come next iPhone's release. (By Mac|Life)

Los Angeles Has Swapped Out 140,000 Street Lights for Highly Efficient LEDS

Highly efficient light bulbs may not be popular in Minnesota’s Sixth District. But the LED has taken over Hollywood.
In 2009, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa launched the Los Angeles LED Street Lighting Energy and Efficiency Program. The plan: swap out over 140,000 street lights and replace them with highly efficient light-emitting diodes. The effort was the largest such street LED light replacement program in the world.
The project is a salient example of the benefits to biting the bullet on high upfront costs in exchange for big savings down the road. In addition to its environmental costs of 110,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide released annually, L.A.’s street lights cost the city $15 million each year. That amounted to between 10 and 38 percent of its utility bill. LEDs use less energy than traditional bulbs. They also last much longer. While a typical street lamp has a life of four to six years, LED lamps last 10 to 12 years. So switching also reduces maintenance and material costs for the city.
The replacement program cost an estimated $57 million over the four years. It was funded through a $40 million loan and $16 million in rebate funds from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, as well as $3.5 million from the Street Lighting Maintenance Assessment Fund. After the loans are repaid through energy savings, the program is expected to save the city $10 million annually from reduced energy usage and maintenance.
Even NIMBYs (not in my back yard) are reportedly happy. Ed Ebrahimian, the director of the Bureau of Street Lighting for L.A. says that “we’ve received many positive comments, even from the Dark Skies Association” because of the reduced sky glow at night.
Since Los Angeles started the program, the practice of mass conversion to LED has been sweeping across the country as cities face environmental concerns as well as shrinking budgets. In 2012, Baltimore completed its conversion of 70,000 street lights, which saves roughly $2 million a year. Portland, Oregon, surprisingly late to the party, is launching a retrofit this year. Other major cities like San Francisco, San Antonio, and Seattle are looking into swapping street lights as well.
While the impact of one household switching to LEDs is small, the impact of many large metropolitan areas switching to LED lighting can be prodigious. As President Clinton, whose Clinton Climate Initiative worked to support the program in Los Angeles, said: “If every city followed the example of Los Angeles and reduced the electricity used by their street lights by 50 percent, it would be equivalent to eliminating over two and a half ... coal plants per year.” (By The Daily Beast)

UV-LED lighting offers possibility for longer fruit shelf life

A group of scientists from U.S.-based Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETi) has found a way to extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables stored in home refrigerators using special lighting, the UV LED developer reported.
The researchers, in collaboration with the Food Components and Health Laboratory, demonstrated that strawberries exposed to extended periods of low UV radiation, low temperatures and high humidity were slower to decompose.
These same conditions can be created in a home refrigerator using “light-emitting diodes” or LED lighting.
According to the study, consumers can keep their produce fresh for longer using a new device that incoropates LED lighting that puts off UV rays similar to those found in sunlight.
Chief investigator Steven Britz explained that the technology developed by SETi seeks to refine the light emitted by LEDs to fit lengths more suited for this application.
“LED-UV light allowed us to test low-power devices that function well in the cold and can be designed to work in small spaces like refrigerator compartments,” he said.
In previous studies, traditional ultraviolet light was tested on product storage but resulted in high levels of dehydration.
For the current study, fruit purchased at the grocery store was used. One lot was stored in a dark refrigerator and another was stored in a refrigerator with UV-LED lighting. Berries under the special lighting lasted for 9 days without mold.
SETi CEO Remis Gaska said the company hopes these discoveries will have a larger business impact on home appliances, to extend shelf life and a reduce waste. (By FreshFruitPortal)

Samsung to Replace All Lightings with LED Lamps by 2015

Samsung Electronics will replace all its lightings with LED (light-emitting diode) lamps, thereby saving energy by a large margin as part of the nation-wide electricity-saving campaign. To that end, the company will invest up to 1.5 trillion won by 2015.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy held on June 19 a kickoff ceremony for the energy-saving initiative in partnership with 15 large corporations including Samsung and Hyundai Motor. Right after the ceremony, Samsung held a briefing session with reporters and said this.
For example, the company will increase the LED lamp introduction ratio to 100 percent by 2015 from current 26 percent. In order to achieve that goal, it will spend 300 billion won. Other companies such as LG Chem, Korea Zinc, and Doosan Heavy Industries are following suit in the cause.
Lighting accounts for 17.3 percent of the nation's total electricity consumption as of 2010. The energy consumption of LED lamp is only a tenth of incandescent lamp and a half of fluorescent light bulb. Only a few years ago, the price of a 60-watt LED lamp was in excess of 40,000 won. Now, the price has come down to a level of only 7,000 to 8,000 won. (By Korea IT Times)

LED-powered 'privacy visor' thwarts facial recognition

Worried that your face is being detected and recorded on everything from security cameras to Google Glass? Don these infrared-emitting glasses to prevent your face from being recognized, and your only worry will be how dorky you look.
The "privacy visor", created by associate professor Isao Echizen at Japan's National Institute of Informatics, use bright, near-infrared LEDs to blast cameras with light that they can see but humans can't. The software that detects faces gets confused and decides that this brightly lit object isn't a face.
It's an idea that has existed in various forms since facial recognition became possible: whether wearing sunglasses, contorting one's features or just growing a beard, faking out the cameras has always been a possibility. These glasses are just a little more convenient.
While it works, this system can still be fooled. Many cameras filter out the type of light generated by the LEDs, for instance, and in some conditions the LEDs might not produce enough light to dazzle the camera. And, of course, there's nothing actually preventing pictures or video from being taken, even if your face couldn't be automatically detected in them.
The privacy visor won't be going on sale any time soon, but if wearable cameras get any more popular, there will surely be a demand for something like it before long. (By NBC News)

Rambus Adds Feature to LED Bulbs

Rambus Inc. added a new feature to its recently invented light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. Its latest LED 65-watt PAR30 bulbs and the 75-watt BR30 bulbs will now have a regulator to adjust in-bulb color temperature. Rambus introduced the LED bulbs in May.
With this feature, end users can adjust the color temperature in LED bulbs and modulate it from 5000K (i.e. cool colors) to 3000K (i.e. warm colors). Color temperature is a standard method of describing colors for use in a range of situations (day to night) and with different equipments. Color temperatures are normally expressed in units called kelvins (K).
Rambus’ innovative technology requires no additional equipments (LEDs or multi-channel drivers) to operate the color temperature. Instead a simple dialer fastened onto the bulbs will maintain the desired level of color temperature, cost efficiently.
Earlier this year, Rambus, better known for its technological inventions, introduced a technology-turned product, its first ever LED bulbs (60-watt A19 bulbs). The bulbs, which leverage its MicroLens optical technology, help generate consistent lighting and control spherical distribution of light. The company asserts that the bulbs are economical (due to lower production cost), energy efficient and long lasting.
The bulbs have improved features such as micro-electronics, dimmer capability, better lumen output (a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted by a source) and advanced thermal management capability.
Rambus’ LED portfolio is ready to hit the market shortly, with the first shipment expected during the third quarter of fiscal 2013.
LED is a semiconductor light source used as indicator lamps in many technological devices and are increasingly being used for general lighting products. LEDs are energy efficient, long lasting, space saving but relatively more expensive than incandescent light sources.
With the rising popularity of energy-efficient lighting, the in-vogue LED products are finding a place in the latest architectural, retail, commercial and residential lighting fixtures. We find Rambus in a favorable position to capitalize on this opportunity. (By Zacks)
