WO3, or tungsten trioxide, is a cathode coloring material with a relatively low color contrast so that it needs to be assembled into a composite electrode complementary electrochromic device together with an anode coloring material such as nickel oxide. Wherein the tungsten oxide film acts as an electrochromic layer. And nickel oxide, as the anode coloring material preferred by researchers, can be used not only as an electrochromic layer, but as an ion storage layer of, to further enhance the light modulation range of the device.

So how to prepare a nickel oxide film? The preparation method of the nickel oxide film mainly includes a magnetron sputtering method, a spray pyrolysis method, a metal organic chemical vapor deposition method, a sol-gel method, a pulse laser deposition method, and a molecular beam epitaxy technique. Each of these preparation methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. The difference in the preparation method will result in differences in electrical, optical, crystal orientation, thickness and surface morphology of the nickel oxide film. And therefore the prepared electrochromic device will have different electrochromic properties.
