Wherein, EC is an electrochromic material, which is a mixed conductor of electrons and ions. EC layer is the core of the smart window, and the WO3 film is the closest EC layer material. CE is a counter electrode or ion storage source. It is also a mixed conductor of electrons and ions. It should be transparent or weakly colored when complementary to the EC or electron/ion exit or injection to ensure a large contrast of the smart window. The ion conductor IC layer can rapidly transfer ions between EC and CE, but there is no electron transport. Li ion conductors are mostly used nowadays, because they are relatively stable and are not easy to generate gases that impair the performance of the device. The transparent conductive TC layer provides input and output of electrons between the EC and CE layers.
