WO3, mainly WO nano particles, or nano particle size tungsten trioxide, is an important cathode electrochromic material, which is classified according to the redox mode of the colored state of the inorganic electrochromic material, and the other type is an anode electrochromic material. The so-called cathode electrochromic material refers to a type of material which is colorless in the high-valent oxidation state and colored in the low-valent reduction state. In addition to tungsten trioxide, such materials are mainly molybdenum trioxide and titanium dioxide.

According to experts, the electrochemical reaction of cathode electrochromic materials is:
MOx (faded state) + yA+ + ye- ←→ AyMOx (colored state) (0≤y≤1)
In the formula, A+ is a positive ion injected or extracted (such as H+, Li+, Na+, etc.). When A+ is injected into MOx, the film changes from a colorless state to a colored state AyMOx.
