How to Spot Stainless Steel Jewelry

Innovations in design and style have made stainless steel the "new silver" for contemporary jewelry design. It is less expensive than sterling silver, white gold or platinum, and it possesses working qualities not found in either titanium or tungsten. Whether polished to a mirror-like brilliance or brushed to a subtle matte finish, it is highly resistant to corrosion, making it a basic for low-maintenance, high-impact fashion jewelry. Low-nickel stainless steel is fast becoming the standard for ear posts and body jewelry.

Instructions
1.Examine the piece in terms of style. Steel beads and elaborate iron wire work jewelry were made in the 19th and early 20th century, but these works are generally coated with black enamel. Stainless steel is a product of the 20 century, and stainless steel jewelry is generally bold and contemporary in design.

2.Look for signs of rust or other corrosion, especially on delicate parts or those stamped from steel sheet. Sterling silver will tarnish upon exposure to air, and regular carbon steel can rust quickly in the presence of moisture and body oils. Stainless steel resists staining and corrosion, as do titanium, tungsten and white gold.

3.ote the weight of the piece and its construction. Titanium, one of the modern metals sometimes mistaken for stainless steel, is noticeably light for its size. Stainless steel can be cut and welded into various shapes to reduce weight or to adjust the size of a ring; neither titanium nor tungsten can be welded once the metal is cast and cut to shape, so adjustments are not possible. Titanium bands will sometimes have other parts, such as a gold gem mounting, riveted in place, however.

4.Check for engraved labeling on inconspicuous areas of the work, such as inside ring or bracelet bands. Stainless steel will generally be labeled as such, and it will generally cost less than a similar item made of other metals.

Titanium Vs. Stainless Steel Rings

Titanium and stainless steel are becoming increasingly popular among the jewelry world. Both less expensive than gold, silver or platinum, it is no surprise the two metals are being used as alternatives for jewelry. People are looking for jewelry that will stand the test of time, after wearing such items day after day, which is why titanium and stainless steel are the new candidates.

Titanium Vs. Tungsten Carbide

Titanium and tungsten carbide are both very hard materials that have numerous practical applications. There are several advantages and disadvantages associated with each of these materials.

Hardness
While both materials are much harder than other metals, such as gold and silver, tungsten carbide is harder than titanium and is much harder to engrave, according to Titanium Kay, a jewelry company.

Ductile
Titanium is more ductile than tungsten carbide. Titanium will bend under high pressure while tungsten carbide will shatter under high pressure.

Weight
Tungsten carbide is much heavier than titanium. Tungsten carbide weighs over 90 percent more than stainless steel while titanium is 43 percent lighter than stainless steel.

Price
Titanium is typically cheaper than tungsten carbide because tungsten carbide has higher production costs. Tungsten is formed in conditions where temperatures exceed 6,000 degrees F.

Applications
Titanium has applications in the aircraft and aircraft missile production industries because it is a very strong but light material, notes the Los Alamos National Labs. Tungsten carbide is used in many applications, including grinding, machining and polishing.

Health
Unlike titanium, some people can have an allergic reaction while coming in contact with tungsten carbide, according to the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services. Exposure to the cobalt in tungsten carbide can lead to lung problems.

Unique Metals for Jewelry for Men

When it comes to traditional wedding bands, most men opt for a simple band fashioned in gold or possibly platinum. Alternative metals that were once only used for industrial applications are edging their way into the jeweler's domain. Metals such as tungsten and titanium are prized for their durability and silver hues.

The tungsten element was discovered in the late 18th century, and its name is Swedish for "heavy stone." It was originally used as the filament of light bulbs, and now, when it's alloyed with carbon -- tungsten carbide -- it's used to make drill bits. Silvery tungsten looks a lot like hematite, and is renowned for its high luster, hardness and resistance to corrosion, which also makes it ideal for jewelry, such as wedding rings that may be subjected to wear and tear. The drawback: tungsten is so hard --10 times harder than gold and four time harder than titanium -- that it can't be cut with conventional tools like other metals can. Special tools that can cut through tungsten rings are available at hospitals.

How to Get a Ring Resized

There are many reasons your ring may need to be resized, including you gaining weight, losing weight, injury or the ring being purchased in the wrong size. In most cases resizing a ring can easily be done by any trained jeweler. Soft metals such as gold, platinum, palladium and silver can be resized. However, if your ring is made of tungsten carbide it cannot be resized. Most rings will only be able to increase two sizes, as the metal will become too thin. If your ring needs to be sized down, this should also be sized two or fewer sizes down. Having your ring sized up or down only one size will give you the optimum outcome.

1.Take your ring to a reputable jeweler. If your ring was purchased with a warranty package, this may include free ring sizing for the life of the jewelry. If so, take your ring to the jeweler who sold it to you.

2.Place the ring sizer on the finger you plan wear your ring on. You may have to try two or three sizes to find the correct fit. Pick a size that is snug enough so that the ring won't fall off but still is comfortable to wear. You want to able to remove your ring when necessary. Your fingers will swell as the day goes on, si it is best to get your ring sized in the middle of the day, when your fingers are at their average size.

3.Inform the jeweler on any engravings in the inside of the ring. Oftentimes when resizing a ring the engraving will be ruined. See if your jeweler can resize the ring without damaging the engraving. If the jeweler is unable to resize the ring without damaging the engraving, ask the jeweler re-engrave the ring.

4.Pick up your ring once the jeweler has notified you that it is done. This process often takes anywhere between one to four weeks depending on how busy the jeweler is, and how difficult the ring is to re-size. Be sure to try on your ring to make sure that it is the proper size. Examine the ring to make sure it is how you left it and that there has been no damage to the ring.

Function of Titanium Ring

Titanium rings can be expensive, because the metal is so hard it requires quite a bit of a jeweler's time to work the material into a ring. An advantage, though, is that titanium is hypoallergenic, so even those with extremely sensitive skin and allergies can wear titanium jewelry without irritation.

Because of the metal's hardness, a rumor has circulated that titanium rings cannot be cut off in an emergency, which could result in losing fingers instead. This is not true; in fact, many jewelers that offer titanium jewelry have tested the product in-house to confirm they can cut through it with a separating disc and shaft tool, or a Dremel tool. Emergency personnel are typically equipped with the proper tools to remove the rings as well. Consider that a ring would only need to be removed this way if there were excessive weight gain or a major accident causing the metal to bend and painfully cut into the finger. This is more likely with other metals, since titanium is as strong as stainless steel.

Titanium Ring Problems

Choosing a precious metal is generally the first step when shopping for jewelry--particularly rings, including, most notably, engagement and wedding rings. Gold and silver have long been used, and platinum has gained in popularity. However, there is another metal, titanium, that has also become fashionable for use in rings.

There are very few documented complaints from those who choose titanium rings. Two possible problems are the expense, and the difficulty resizing the rings.

History
According to International Titanium Powder (ITP), titanium was discovered in 1791, and later named after the Greek god Titan by Dr. Martin H. Klaproth. It went mostly unused until the 1950s, when airplanes were built with the strong, durable yet lightweight metal. Now it's used to for planes, medical and dental procedures, aerospace, architecture and jewelry, among other things.

Sizing
Sizing your titanium ring properly is one of the most important steps when ordering it. Titanium rings are nearly impossible to re-size because of the strength of the metal. Stretching the ring one-fourth to one-half a size is possible for many jewelers; however, only inserting a spacer will make the ring smaller. To avoid costly reorders, confirm the correct ring size multiple times before placing an order.

Significance
Another benefit of the tough metal is its resistance to chemicals and everyday wear-and-tear. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to scratch a titanium ring. Basic grade titanium rings scratch almost as easily as silver, gold or platinum rings. Aircraft grade titanium is much more resistant to scratches. Either metal will likely make you happy, as you can simply have the ring refinished or buffed to restore it to its original state.

Potential
lack titanium is increasing in popularity, as it adds another dimension to the metal. However, some companies add coloring as an overlay finish, which will not last. This layer will eventually fade or scratch off, and may cause irritation. Therefore, if you're choosing an altered hue of titanium, confirm that the coloring process occurs during the refinery process.

Titanium vs. Tungsten Jewelry

Due to scientific developments, alternative metals are becoming more popular within the fine jewelry industry. Although gold, silver, and platinum are still the most popular metals, alternative metals offer a different look and hypoallergenic options for consumers with sensitive skin. More specifically, titanium and tungsten have been growing in popularity.

Tungsten Facts
Facts-About.org says that tungsten is "extracted from wolframite, scheelite, and other minerals." Tungsten is typically mixed with carbide to make it scratch-proof.

Tungsten Pros
Tungsten is known to last long and is said to outlive the wearer. It is corrosion- and scratch-resistant, and requires very little maintenance.

Tungsten Cons
Tungsten rings may contain cobalt, which may cause negative skin reactions in some wearers. Titanium-Jewelry.com says that tungsten "will develop oxidation spots that cannot be removed or polished out."

Titanium Facts
Facts-About.org says titanium is "the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust." Titanium is lightweight, yet strong and long-lasting.

Titanium Pros
Titanium is hypoallergenic and preferred by consumers with sensitive skin. Titanium is not a precious metal, so it is inexpensive.

Titanium Cons
Titanium cannot be soldered, therefore, prong settings cannot be created to set diamonds or gem stones. Titanium jewelry cannot be sized, so you must be fitted before ordering.
