Carbon Variety Influenced Tungsten Carbide Button Performance

For strength: In the normal peak, low-cobalt tungsten carbide (YG10) containing the maximum flexural strength appears in high-carbon side. While cobalt high-carbide (YG20) containing the maximum flexural strength appears in low-carbon side. So YG10 tungsten carbide should be used high-carbon WC as raw material, and YG20 tungsten carbide WC should be used low-carbon WC as raw material.
For hardness: It is easy to produce hard and brittle η phase and reduce the content of binder phase, makes WC grain refinement and the hardness be raised when carbon is inadequate. However, if carbon is too little, it will make η phase too much and hardness decreased. What’s more, excessive carbon will make the tungsten carbide produce soft phase graphite mixed together, which decrease hardness gradually.
