Yellow tungsten oxide, with the chemical formula WO₃, is an important member of the tungsten oxide family, appearing as yellow or yellow-green powdered crystals. Its color variation is closely related to its crystal size: it exhibits a bright yellow color when the crystal size is approximately 1.5 micrometers and shifts to green when the crystal size increases to 15 micrometers. Despite the difference in appearance color, its basic characteristics remain consistent.
I. Physical Properties of Yellow Tungsten Oxide
Appearance: Yellow or yellow-green fine crystalline powder
Particle Size: Passes through an 80-mesh sieve
Bulk Density: 2.3~2.8 g/cm³
Stability: Stable at room temperature
II. Chemical Properties of Yellow Tungsten Oxide
Insolubility and Solubility: Yellow tungsten oxide is insoluble in water and inorganic acids except hydrofluoric acid, but it is soluble in alkaline solutions (such as ammonia water) and concentrated hydrochloric acid, and slightly soluble in hydrofluoric acid. It also dissolves slowly in hot concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.
Acidic Oxide: Yellow tungsten oxide is an acidic oxide that reacts with bases to form tungstates.
Oxidizing Property: At high temperatures, yellow tungsten oxide exhibits oxidizing properties and can react with some metals.
Photocatalysis: Yellow tungsten oxide has semiconductor properties, generating photogenerated electrons and holes under illumination, exhibiting photocatalytic activity. It can be used for the degradation of organic pollutants and the photolysis of water to produce hydrogen.
Electrochromism: Yellow tungsten oxide films undergo reversible color changes under applied voltage, known as the electrochromic effect, which can be used in smart windows and displays.
III. Packaging Specifications of Yellow Tungsten Oxide
Packaging: Iron drums lined with plastic bags
Net Weight: 100 kg/drum, 200 kg/drum, negotiable
IV. Main Applications of Yellow Tungsten Oxide
Metallurgical Industry: As an important intermediate in tungsten metallurgy, it is widely used in the manufacture of various tungsten products, including the production of tungsten metal powder and tungsten carbide powder, the production of tungsten-based alloys such as tungsten-copper, tungsten-nickel, tungsten-nickel-iron, tungsten-silver, tungsten-rhenium, and tungsten-thorium, and the production of cemented carbide products known as "industrial teeth".
Chemical Industry: Used in the manufacture of tungstates and other chemicals. Its vivid yellow color makes it an ideal material for ceramic pigments and paint production, and its catalytic properties play an important role in catalysts for the petroleum industry.
Environmental Protection and Energy: Leveraging its semiconductor photocatalytic properties, yellow tungsten oxide is widely used and deeply studied as a photocatalyst in environmental governance and new energy development. Nano-yellow tungsten oxide can be used to manufacture high-sensitivity gas sensors for detecting harmful gases in the environment, and it can also serve as an efficient catalyst for organic synthesis and wastewater treatment.
Electronics and Optoelectronics: Due to its excellent electrical and optical properties, yellow tungsten oxide is widely used in the manufacture of electronic devices and optoelectronic equipment, such as serving as semiconductor material in thin-film transistors (TFTs), transparent conductive films in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Additionally, yellow tungsten oxide is used in the manufacture of photodetectors, solar cells, and photoelectrochemical cells, which have important applications in renewable energy and photoelectric conversion.
Military and Aerospace: Yellow tungsten oxide has important applications in the military and aerospace fields due to its high melting point, high hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance. It can be used to manufacture high-temperature alloys and heat-resistant coatings, which play a crucial role in aerospace engines, rocket propellers, and high-temperature structural components. Furthermore, yellow tungsten oxide can be used to manufacture high-strength armor materials and protective coatings, enhancing the protective performance and durability of military equipment.
Medical and Biotechnology: Yellow tungsten oxide also finds applications in the medical and biotechnology fields. For example, it can be used to manufacture biosensors and medical diagnostic equipment for detecting biomolecules and disease markers. Additionally, nano-yellow tungsten oxide can be used in drug delivery systems and photothermal therapy in cancer treatment, enhancing drug targeting and therapeutic efficacy.
