Tungsten Alloy Cardboard Box

The type of container used and the safety precautions put in place during transport depend on the type and the amount of nuclear material being transported. For small amounts of nuclear materials which have short half-lives and very low levels of radioactivity, all that is needed is a simple tungsten alloy cardboard box.

For larger amounts of highly radioactive nuclear material such as used nuclear fuel, tungsten alloy cardboard box has been developed capable of remaining intact during and after catastrophic accidents such as being hit by a train (as shown on the right, being in a fire or being submerged in water.
