What Is Tungsten Diiodide? —Ⅱ

Tungsten diiodide ( WI2) is the iodide of tungsten (II), which is the metal salt of tungsten and hydroiodic acid. Its English name is Tungsten Diiodide, CAS number : 13470-17-2, relative molecular mass : 437.65.

Tungsten diiodide has a black powder appearance, and its solubility is different between inorganic solvents and organic solvents. For inorganic solvents, insoluble in cold water and soluble in alkali ; for organic solvents, it is neither soluble in ethanol nor soluble in CS2. The density of tungsten diiodide is 6.79 g/cm3.Its structure is the same as tungsten dichloride, which is orthorhombic system, space group Bbem (No.64), lattice parameters a = 1258 pm, b = 1259 pm, c = 1584 pm. Using these characteristics, tungsten diiodide has important applications in the fields of optoelectronics, material science, and semiconductor industry. For example, it can be used to prepare semiconductor materials, which can be further used to prepare electronic devices and batteries.

Tungsten diiodide is stable at room temperature, but it is easy to decompose at high temperature. Because the nature of iodine in tungsten diiodide is not active, it will not have a strong corrosion effect relative to the three elements of fluorine, chlorine and bromine, so it becomes the first of the four halogen elements to be used in halogen tungsten lamps and as a looping agent. The iodine tungsten lamp belongs to the thermal radiation light source, which has the characteristics of high brightness and long life. A 1000-watt iodine tungsten lamp is equivalent to the brightness of a 5000-watt ordinary bulb. However, it also has disadvantages, such as high energy consumption and large heat dissipation. Compared with other lamps, iodine tungsten lamp consumes more power under the same brightness. Therefore, compared with household lamps, iodine tungsten lamps are more suitable for lighting in large places such as stage and factory.
