Preparation of Molybdenum Carbide

Molybdenum carbide (chemical formula MoC) has the characteristics of high melting point, hardness, good thermal, fine mechanical stability and excellent corrosion resistance.

Molybdenum is a kind of silvery white refractory metal with melting point of 2615℃ and density of 10.2g/cm3, its expansion coefficient is almost the same as that of the special glass used in electron tubes. Molybdenum is stable at room temperature and oxidizes rapidly above 600℃. It reacts with carbon, hydrocarbon or carbon monoxide to generate MoC above 800℃.

Preparation procedure:

1.0 Mix 200 mg ammonium molybdate and melamine directly into a ceramic crucible (mass ratio 1:2), the mixture crucible is put in a quartz tube, and heat the vacuum tube to 800℃ at the rate of 3℃ per minute in argon atmosphere, keep the mixture storing for 3h, and then naturally cooled to room temperature to make MoC preparation.

2.0 At the same time, to better study the relationship between catalyst structure and electrochemical catalyst property, the following methods are also available for production.

2.1 The ratio remains unchanged, the mass ratio of ammonium molybdate and melamine is still 1:2, and the heat treatment temperature is 700℃, 900℃and 1000℃.

2.2 Keep the heat treatment temperature remaining at 800℃, adjust the proportion of raw materials, so the mass ratio of ammonium molybdate and melamine is 0.5:2, 2:2 and 4:2.

It has been widely used in various fields such as high temperature resistance, abrasion resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, which has electronic structure and catalytic property similar to precious metals, also has high hardness, wear resistance and scratch resistance. It is an important part of molybdenum-molybdenum carbide hard coating and other cermet coatings. It also can be used alone for wear resistance, anti-scratch coating.
