Stability of Tungsten Hexachloride

1. Under standard conditions, WCl6 exists as a volatile solid.

2. When heated, WCl6 is oxidized by oxygen in the air to produce tungsten oxychloride or tungsten oxide.

3. WCl6 containing tungsten oxychloride is easily decomposed by water vapor.

4. Under high temperature conditions, WCl6 is reduced by hydrogen to precipitate tungsten powder.

5. WCl6 is soluble in dry carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and phosphoryl chloride, etc.

6. Whether in water or humid air, WCl6 is soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene, CCl4, and is easily soluble in CS2, POCl.

7. The vapor has a yellowish red color, and red crystals are obtained when it cools, but it becomes black when it is slightly hot. The black product cools at dry ice temperature and turns red again.
