Physical properties of tungsten disulfide: Gray fine crystals or powder with metallic luster. Hexagonal (β-WS2) or orthorhombic crystal system (α-WS2). It has a layered structure, wherein, each W ion is surrounded by a cluster of S atoms arranged in a triangular prism shape. It is stable in air, insoluble in water, alcohol, dilute nitric acid and sulfuric acid, but soluble in the mixture of aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid, molten alkali and alkali metal carbonate.
Chemical properties of tungsten disulfide: A semiconductor and diamagnetic material. WS2 decomposes when heated in air, but its thermal stability is higher than that of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). It can be converted into tungsten trioxide (WO3) when heated in air or oxygen. It has good lubricating properties, and is a new type of solid lubricant.
