Tungsten Heavy Alloy Collimator

Tungsten heavy alloy collimator, an important part of detector of SPECT system, is a collimator made of high density tungsten-based alloy with composition of W-Ni-Fe, W-Ni-Cu or W-Ni-Cu-Fe. There are a certain number of holes arranged on the collimator. According to the form of the drilled hole, the tungsten heavy alloy collimator is divided into tungsten alloy parallel-hole collimator, tungsten alloy focusing collimator, tungsten alloy converging collimator, and tungsten alloy pinhole collimator.

But why choose tungsten heavy alloy as the raw material for producing collimator?

That is because tungsten heavy alloy is the best raw material for shielding due to its own properties of high density, machinability, good corrosion resistance, high strength and high radiation absorption capability (superior to lead and steel). And high density tungsten alloy collimator has the same radiation shielding ability as lead even when dwindled in volume and thickness. In addition, compared with lead and depleted uranium, tungsten heavy alloy is more environmentally friendly due to its non-toxic and pollution-free property.

Wherein, SPECT is the short for single photon emission computed tomography, a CT technology for nuclear medicine.
