What is Tungsten Disulfide/Graphene Composite?

Composite of tungsten disulfide and graphene, with two-dimensional structure, has high catalytic activity and excellent electro-catalytic properties. It has broad application prospects in the field of full cell and is regarded as a material to replace the traditional electrocatalyst.

Fuel cell, which has high energy and long service life, is clean and easy to use. Usually, its raw materials are easy to access. As a new energy conversion system with high efficiency, it has great potential to become one of the alternative energy sources for micro-electronic components. And cathodic oxygen reduction is a very important factor influencing its efficiency. Electrocatalysts are usually used to increase the cathodic reaction rate. And Pt electrocatalyst is widely used at present.

However, there are some problems in Pt electrocatalyst’s application process. The fuel cell anode is easy to penetrate into the cathode, and produces toxic CO by the electrooxidation with Pt catalyst, which reduces the catalytic activity and decreases the efficiency of the fuel cell. Composite of tungsten disulfide and graphene is prepared to solve the problems.

Composite of tungsten disulfide and graphene has high catalytic activity and good electrochemical performance. Among them, catalytic activity is greatly improved with the aid of the composite’s two-dimensional structure. Tungsten disulfide is stably combined with graphene with related functional groups by electrostatic force. The addition of tungsten disulfide leads to the rapid migration of electrons and the increase of catalytic activity. The increase of graphene defects and active sites situ synthesis process benefits the dissociation of oxygen molecules. The starting potential of the material is -0.17 V vs SCE and the limiting current density is 2.5  mA/cm².

Moreover, composite of tungsten disulfide and graphene has excellent methanol-tolerant properties. It can be prepared to replace Pt-based electrocatalyst.
