Tungsten Salt Lubricant Oil Additives Containing Carboxylic Acid

Vehicles in high temperature and high speed must be fully lubricated between moving parts to ensure normal operation. Lubrication system plays an important role in lubrication, cleaning, cooling and rust prevention of engine friction surfaces.

Tungsten is a heavy metal with the highest melting point. It has high hardness, high density and good high temperature strength. This property of tungsten is also used to develop a series of chemical additives with high temperature and friction resistance. Oil-soluble compounds were obtained by salt formation of high-valent tungsten ions with organic compounds and dispersed in engine oil. Under engine working conditions, tungsten ions and organic compounds jointly adhered to the cylinder block to form a wall film, which has good temperature resistance and wear resistance. Tungsten salts containing carboxylic acid can be used as lubricant oil additives. The synthesis methods include:

Raw material preparation: C18-22 carboxylic acid, CCl₄, tungsten hexachloride WCl₆, rapeseed oil and mineral oil.

Solution A: After dissolving oleic acid in CCl4, add 4 times the volume of CCl4 rapeseed oil.

Solution B: After dissolving WCl₆ in CCl₄, rapeseed oil and mineral oil mixture of twice the volume of CCl4 were added, in which the volume ratio of mineral oil was 40%.

In the anhydrous reactor, liquid B is added and heated. The temperature of the controller does not exceed 40 ℃. In 10 minutes, liquid A is added in batches. After exothermic reaction, the temperature of the system gradually increased to 74 ℃, and the reaction continued for 2 hours. Most CCl₄ is recovered by distillation, and residual CCl₄, HCl and other low boiling point impurities are removed by pump decompression. Tungsten carboxylate mother liquor containing 4% tungsten was obtained. The mother liquor was used as additive to match engine oil.

The synthetic engine oil with tungsten salts containing carboxylic acid as lubricant additive has excellent wear resistance and lubricity, and good flow and film forming properties. Organic tungsten salts, which contain high valence heavy tungsten atoms and strong ionic bonds formed by oxygen and chlorine, have strong adsorption with metal or metal oxide surfaces and act as fixed molecules. Compared with the traditional oil, it can greatly improve the anti-wear and lubrication performance, significantly prolong the use time of the engine, reduce energy consumption and save costs.
