Microwave Sintering of Nano Tungsten Carbide

Because tungsten carbide and platinum have many similarities in catalysis, tungsten carbide is widely used in catalyst field. Therefore, the preparation of Nanocrystalline Tungsten carbide is increasingly important.

In the traditional preparation methods of nano tungsten carbide, high-energy ball milling, high-temperature solid-state method and other commonly used preparation methods of nano-tungsten carbide generally have large particle size (up to micron), low purity, complex experimental methods and high energy consumption, seriously affecting the strength, hardness and catalytic properties of tungsten carbide. As a result, researchers have never stopped exploring nano tungsten carbide.

Some scholars have proposed a different preparation plan for nano tungsten carbide, which is as follows:

31.7 g ammonium metatungstate was dissolved in distilled water, ultrasonic treatment for 5 minutes, tungsten source was changed into clarified solution, 0.6 g carbon was dissolved into clarified solution, ultrasonic treatment for 5 minutes, and then magnetic stirring for 15 minutes was used to mix the carbon and tungsten sources in the solution evenly. The solution was dried in 80 ℃ vacuum environment and put into ball mill for 12 hours. The samples were sintered in microwave oven for 2 minutes. Finally, the specific surface area of the sintered powder was 31.2 (m2/g) by BET.

The study found that carbon is an excellent microwave sensitive substance, they can absorb microwaves instantaneously, and there is no residual heat in the microwave, so that the tungsten carbide reaches the quenching effect, the crystal grains are not easy to grow, and the microwave has good penetrability, making the material The inside and the outside are heated almost simultaneously, so the microwave-sintered tungsten carbide product is uniformly dense.

Therefore, the microwave sintering method can quickly and effectively prepare small particle size of nano-tungsten carbide, and the prepared nano-tungsten carbide particle size is small, high purity, good density, suitable for industrial preparation of nano-tungsten carbide.
