China's tungsten reserves account for 70% of the total global tungsten reserves; the output and export volume of tungsten ore have been ranked the first all over the world for a long time. However, the annual total tungsten mining volume is limited, so the tungsten supply is also subject to limitation. China's tungsten ore has supplied the world at low price for long time, and 85% of world's tungsten comes from China.

China's tungsten resources are widely distributed in 23 provinces (autonomous regions),  there are 382 tungsten ores in China, which mainly distribute in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia and Fujian. As for tungsten reserves, China's tungsten resources mainly distribute in Hunan and Jiangxi. As far as the types of tungsten ore, China's main type is white tungsten ore, followed by black tungsten and black-and-white mixed tungsten ore, the proportion is 69%, 22% and 9% respectively.

From 2003 to 2011, China's tungsten ore reserves decreased from 4.2 million tons to 1.9 million tons with the decline of 54.8%. Calculated in accordance with the production capacity in 2010, the current reserves only own 23 years of mining life. China's Oil, Gas and Solid Mineral Resources Reserves in 2012, which was issued by the Ministry of Land and Resources, note that the newly-added tungsten ore was 841,000 tons in 2012.

The output of tungsten concentrate was 124,706 tons in 2012, increased by 122,000 tons over 2011 with the growth rate of 2.25%.

European ammonium paratungstate  prices (APT prices) have edged up after almost two months of stability between USD345-355mtu in warehouse Rotterdam.

Whilst China export prices have been increasing steadily since the beginning of April due to rising raw material costs, figures in Europe have held flat as consumers showed little appetite to procure material from the spot market. Late last week that changed and since Thursday a flurry of buying activity from both the inter-trade and consumer markets has helped mainstream prices lift to between USD360-370mtu in warehouse Rotterdam as of Wednesday.

European ferro-tungsten figures continue to strengthen on supply concerns.

The low levels of ferro-tungsten stock being held in Rotterdam have been compounded by the news that the large Vietnamese producer will be cutting its production output by almost half in 2013.

This has been caused by a knock on effect from last month’s announcement that the plant had suffered from a serious electrical fault, and with future supply of material now in doubt, stockholders of material in Europe were quick to raise offers from USD46.50-47.50kg W in warehouse Rotterdam during the middle of last week, to between USD47.50-48.50kg W in warehouse Rotterdam on Tuesday.
