Thermal and Mechanochemical Decomposition of Ammonium Paratungstate (APT)

APT Image

Ammonium paratungstate (APT) is the general starting material used in the manufacturing of tungsten products. For instance, tungsten trioxide (WO3) is obtained by thermal decomposition of APT. WO3 has been applied as catalysts, it is also a common starting material for preparation of tungsten metal powder. The application fields of tungsten metal powder include lightings, electronics, and high-temperature materials.

Low-temperature Hydrothermal Reduction of Ammonium Paratungstate to Ammonium Tungsten Bronze

Tungsten Bronze Image

Hydrothermal synthesis has become a popular and important technique in solid state chemistry. It allows for the formation of novel compounds that cannot be formed by traditional high-temperature solid state reactions. With this technique, ammonium paratungstate can be reduced to ammonium tungsten bronze, at a lower temperature of 200 °C in nonaqueous solvents.

Tungsten Carbide Graver

tungsten carbide graver picture

Tungsten carbide graver is also known as cemented carbide graver, which has higher hardness, better wear resistance and longer service life than the commonly used carbon steel graver and white steel graver. Wherein, carbon steel graver is generally suitable for beginners as it has low hardness and strength.

A New Solid–Gas Phase Reaction to Prepare Ammonium Paratungstate(APT)

SEM images of the precursor oxides produced from APT-2

The ammonium paratungstate (APT) is the most important starting material in the tungsten industry, where usually its most stable APTÂ4H2O form is used. Tungsten compounds such as, tungsten oxides, tungsten carbides or tungsten metal can be prepared with APT.  All these tungsten products have important applications in a many fields. Among which, tungsten oxides are widely used in catalysts, gas sensors, and photocatalysts. Tungsten carbide products have been used as catalysts as well, but another important application field they shared is being the hard component in cutting and drilling tools.
