Further Studies on Tungsten Carbide Cutting Tool Fatigue Are Needed

Tungsten carbide cutting tool, with high intensity, abrasion resistance and hardness, is widely used in the cutting machining. However, the tungsten carbide cutting tool fatigue problem is one of the primary reasons that are restraining its growth.
 
Tungsten carbide cutting tool is normally used in bad working condition and has to suffer from cyclic loading, thermal cycling and corrosion. Tungsten carbide cutting tool fatigue is one main factor contributing to tool damage. The types of tool fatigue include mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue, corrosion fatigue, etc. In mechanical fatigue, tools suffer from alternating tension and compression as well as impact under cyclic loading and finally produce fatigue crack even if the mechanical stress has not yet reached the limit of tungsten carbide’s intensity. In thermal fatigue, the tungsten carbide cutting tool, interacting with its environment, surfers from thermal cycling, which results in its Internal energy changing and finally the tool material will produce crack source which can expand to microcracks. In corrosion fatigue, the components interact with the corrosion medium in the environment when used and caused crack or break. However, in is in fact that these types of fatigues are interacting at the same time during the actual applications of tungsten carbide cutting tools.
 
Currently, the reports about tungsten carbide cutting tools intensity account for a great majority, while researches about its toughness and fatigue property are few. In order to improve the core competitiveness in the international market especially the high-end product area, China should carry out further researches on the tungsten carbide cutting tool fatigue problem.
