Tungsten Trioxide Applied for Glass Insulating Coating

Tungsten trioxide is one of many kinds of inorganic electrochromic materials for preparing glass insulating coating. And WO3 is the typical representative of the most recently studied cathode electrochromic materials. But do you know why inorganic electrochromic materials are used as heat insulation coatings instead of organic electrochromic materials for exterior glasses of buildings?

As you may have known, ultraviolet (UV) is electromagnetic radiation with wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm, shorter than that of visible light but longer than X-rays. UV radiation is present in sunlight, and contributes about 10% of the total electromagnetic radiation output from the Sun. so it is important to shield UV rays. Organic electrochromic materials mainly include viologen, pyrazoline and polyaniline. These organic electrochromic materials are unstable. And they are also sensitive to ultraviolet light. While inorganic electrochromic material such as nano particle size tungsten trioxide is stable. And it can also shield most of the ultraviolet rays. Therefore, generally, organic electrochromic materials are not suitable for use in glasses of exterior wall.
