Nest-like WO3•0.33H2O may be used to prepare an electrochromic film and then be used to produce a smart window - an energy-saving window that provides the function of thermal insulation, anti-glare and UV resistance. Specifically, some experts have prepared a nest-like hydrated tungsten trioxide electrochromic film on a FTO conductive substrate by a self-seeding hydrothermal method.

Experts said that the self-seeding hydrothermal method eliminates the dependence of the hydrothermal growth of tungsten trioxide film on the seed layer, eliminates the blocking of electron by thin film dense seed layer prepared by seed-assisted hydrothermal method, and improves the electron transport speed and electron transport efficiency. Therefore, compared with the WO3 film prepared by seed-assisted method, the WO3 film prepared by self-seeding hydrothermal method shows a faster response speed, a larger light modulation range and higher coloring efficiency without affecting the cycle stability. And the light modulation range of the WO3 film prepared by self-seeding hydrothermal method was increased by 27% at ±0.5V, the coloring time was shortened by 28%, and the coloring efficiency was 126.3cm2/C.
