Ta doped tungsten trioxide is a combination of Ta2O5 and WO3, which can combine the advantages of two materials to achieve higher mechanical and chemical compatibility, thereby improving the stability and using life of the device. In other words, the performance of the electrochromic film prepared from such composite material will be improved.

Experts say that tungsten trioxide has excellent electrochromic properties such as high coloring efficiency, good reversibility, and long memory time, etc. And WO3 plays an important role in the research of electrochromic materials and devices. However, tungsten trioxide dissolves in the proton-type electrolyte, thereby limiting its use in electrochromic devices in which a proton-type electrolyte is used as a conductive layer. Studies have shown that nano composite oxide electrochromic materials can improve device stability, shorten response time and extend device lifetime. In this regard, experts say that Ta2O5 has excellent ion and proton conductivity, and has excellent transparency over a wide wavelength range with the characteristics of good thermal stability, mechanical stability and chemical stability. So, Ta2O5 is commonly used in electrolyte or protective layer materials in all solid state electrochromic devices. In a word, the electrochromic film of Ta2O5 and WO3 composite materials not only has the advantages of tungsten trioxide film, but also can take advantage of Ta2O5, so Ta doping tungsten trioxide film is also one of the research focuses in the field of electrochromism.
