Molybdenum market update on February 14, 2025

This week, the domestic molybdenum market exhibited a generally weak consolidation trend, with the price of molybdenum concentrate dropping by approximately 0.28%, ferromolybdenum prices falling by about 0.43%, and molybdenum oxide prices declining by around 0.27%. 

In this context, traders' sentiment has become relatively complex, with most adopting a cautious and wait-and-see approach. Recently, the sales price of Mo50-55% grade molybdenum concentrate from a mine in Jilin was reported at RMB 3,570 per ton.

From a positive perspective, two key factors stand out: Since the Spring Festival, steel companies have concentrated their efforts on bidding for ferromolybdenum, significantly boosting market activity. As of now, the total volume of ferromolybdenum bids by steel companies this month has reached approximately 8,200 tons. Due to tightening environmental protection policies and adverse weather conditions, the production capacity of many molybdenum mining companies has been constrained. Additionally, suppliers are holding a large number of orders, increasing the likelihood of product prices remaining stable.

On the negative side, two main factors are at play: Steel companies are less willing to accept high-priced ferromolybdenum, which has weakened the confidence of some molybdenum concentrate holders in maintaining stable prices. The lukewarm performance of the international molybdenum market, coupled with industry players' concerns about both domestic and global molybdenum markets, has made it difficult for the domestic molybdenum market to gain momentum.

According to the Baotou Industry and Information Technology Bureau, among the three non-ferrous metal products monitored in Baotou City:

The average price of aluminum was RMB 20,031 per ton, up 0.4% month-on-month and 5.4% year-on-year.

The average price of magnesium was RMB 17,900 per ton, down 0.1% month-on-month and 18.5% year-on-year.

The average price of copper was RMB 75,050 per ton, up 0.7% month-on-month and 9.6% year-on-year.
