Hydro helping to Power Up Tungsten Mine at King Island

In a recent announcement, the Tasmanian Liberal Government welcomed Group 6 Metals' redevelopment of its Dolphin tungsten mine in Grassy, King Island.

The mine, which has been closed since the early 1990s, is one of the largest tungsten mines in the western world. group 6 metals has been awarded a $49 million contract to design, procure, construct and commission a processing plant and related facilities on the island.

These announcements come on top of the Tasmanian Government's commitment earlier this year to provide a $10 million commercial loan to help the project move forward.

On the recommendation of the Tasmanian Development Commission, the Government has also agreed to provide up to $2 million to Tasmanian Hydro to assist with the cost of upgrading King Island's existing public power line infrastructure to support the mine's operations.

The infrastructure upgrades will provide indirect benefits to the King Island community through improved performance of the distribution system. Tasmanian Hydro will use local contractors and bring specialist contractors to the island to complete the upgrades.

State Growth Minister Roger Jaensch said, "The Liberal Government of Tasmania supports and promotes investment in our region and this project has significant economic growth opportunities for King Island and the state as a whole."

"This project, which creates up to 90 full-time jobs during construction and approximately 65 ongoing full-time jobs, will be particularly welcome on Kings Island." Resources Minister Guy Barnett said, "This announcement comes on the heels of other recent good news for the mining industry, including the signing of an option agreement for New Century Resources to acquire the iconic Lyell Mountain mine and a boom in mineral exports of more than $2.6 billion in the year to August."

Employment is a key priority for the Tasmanian Government and we look forward to continuing to work with Group 6 Metals to see this exciting tungsten mine project come to fruition.
