People propose to use oxygen-vacant tungsten oxide nanoparticles as raw materials for the preparation of energy storage electrodes to fill the blank in the lithium battery recycling market. According to data from Circular Energy Storage, London-based circular energy storage, 1.2 million tons of lithium-ion batteries will reach their lifespan in the upcoming decade, and if they cannot be handled scientifically, it will harm the natural environment greatly.
Most battery recycling plants and laboratories are located in China, South Korea, Europe, Japan, and the United States. Among them, China has become a major role in the battery recycling market. China recycled around 67,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries last year, followed by 18,000 tons was recycled in South Korea.
Besides, Circular Energy Storage estimates that by 2030, recycling facilities could recover 125,000 tons of lithium, 35,000 tons of cobalt and 86,000 tons of nickel. Based on the current prices of these materials, this would add a $ 6 billion recycling market.
Although China is a large battery recycler, it still concerns about the low level of lithium battery recycling technology, which cannot alleviate the shortage of rare metals to the greatest extent. In this regard, people in the industry have proposed that oxygen-vacant tungsten oxide nanoparticles can be used as raw materials for the preparation of energy storage electrodes. Not only as tungsten oxide could effectively improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries, but also because it is abundant in China.
Recycling technologies for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries are not keeping pace with the rapid rise of electric vehicles, storing up a potentially huge waste management problem for the future. Affected by the lack of cobalt and nickel resources and imperfect lithium battery recycling technology, researchers have been encouraged to develop new oxygen-vacant tungsten oxide electrode materials to fill the blank in the global lithium battery recycling market.
