It is reported that the National Level Institute of Rare Earth Catalyst was unveiled recently and it will focus on the layout of mobile source exhaust gas purification, fixed source exhaust gas treatment, new energy catalysis, etc., and implement the national + industry + enterprise operation mode.
According to The Paper news, the "Institute of Rare Earth Catalyst signing and unveiling ceremony" was successfully held in Dongying, Shandong on August 9. It is a national-level research institute established under the guidance of the National Advisory Committee on New Materials Industry Development Strategy Experts, led by Tianjin University and jointly established by industry leaders.
The aim is to build a new R&D and innovation system, integrating academic, innovative, and industrial chain with the national strategic needs, combined with national key new materials research, development, and application of major projects, to solve the "card neck" problem of industry application, to break foreign patent monopoly and technical blockade, occupying commanding heights of future industrial technology, and supporting implementation of the strategy of strengthening our country through science and technology.
As a kind of environmentally friendly functional material with various properties such as electricity, magnetism, light, and biochemistry, rare metals play irreplaceable roles in solving environmental problems. Due to the abundant energy level and special 4f outer electron layer structure and lattice oxygen make their excellent properties in gas-phase catalysis.
Firstly, in the purification of mobile source exhaust gas, the catalytic aid and oxygen storage material composed of oxides of light rare earths such as Ce, La, Pr, Nd play a key role. At present, CeO2-ZrO2 composite oxide has been developed into a mainstream oxygen storage material, which is widely used in three-way catalytic materials and cannot be replaced in a short period time. For diesel vehicle exhaust gas purification, the oxides, especially cerium oxide, are used in NH3-SCR catalysts to improve low-temperature activity, alkali resistance and hydrothermal stability of the catalyst, and have gradually become NH3 in recent years.
Secondly, the application in the treatment of fixed source exhaust gas, for industrial flue gas denitration and volatile organic pollutant removal. The use of rare earth materials to improve catalytic combustion effect can reduce the combustion temperature, improve combustion efficiency, reduce the formation of NOx and incomplete combustion products, and it owns the advantages of high efficiency, energy-saving, and environmental friendliness.
Thirdly, the application in natural gas catalytic combustion, catalytic combustion is a high-efficiency, environmentally friendly, energy-saving, safe operation of high-quality energy utilization. Compared with ordinary flame combustion, it has the advantages of high combustion efficiency, stable combustion, and ultra-low emissions. As the world's energy consumption continues to grow and environmental standards become more stringent, the development of energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and efficient new energy materials and exhaust gas treatment materials is the future direction.
Although China's resources are abundant but not in a strong position. Institute of Rare Earth Catalyst aims on promoting high-quality and high-efficiency applications. In this sense, deepening the technology development and research of rare earth catalyst in environmental treatment can not only reduce environmental pollution but also effectively utilize China's high-abundance resources.
